About Innovate Depict Inspire Packaging

Innovate Depict Inspire is a packaging design for colored pencils. The tiered base includes secure slots that keep the pencils arranged and easy to reach. Cushioning foam inside the lid protects the pencil tips. Indentations on the lid serve as a phone stand or as a temporary rest for pencils in use. A sharpener is placed on the back, and horizontal locking slots hold the lid firmly to the base. The graphics pair Jingdezhen porcelain flower patterns for the 24 solar terms with abstract geometric shapes and soft color palettes.

Zhu Jinliang, Han Lu, Lin Huangshan's Innovate Depict Inspire Packaging engages the material culture of art education with a design philosophy that honors the contemplative rituals of creative practice, positioning colored pencils within a presentation framework that transcends utilitarian containment to become an aesthetic meditation on the relationship between tools, materials, and the acts of drawing and coloring that have served human expression across cultures and centuries. The structural innovation evident in the angular prismatic forms suggests an awareness of contemporary packaging discourse that seeks differentiation through geometric exploration, moving beyond conventional rectangular formats toward architectonic profiles that create visual interest on retail shelves while maintaining the practical requirements of efficient storage, shipping, and display. The decision to employ soft blush pink as the dominant chromatic foundation proves particularly sophisticated, as this hue navigates multiple symbolic registers simultaneously: it evokes the delicate petals of the illustrated botanicals, creating thematic coherence between surface decoration and structural color; it suggests gentleness and approachability that invites engagement from younger users while avoiding saccharine excess that might alienate adult practitioners; and it provides optimal contrast for the vibrant spectrum of pencil colors visible through the open aperture, allowing the product itself to become the most saturated chromatic element in the overall composition. The botanical illustrations adorning multiple surfaces operate within a rich tradition of floral decoration in product design, yet their execution through loose watercolor-style rendering distinguishes them from more conventional photographic or vector-based floral motifs, embedding within the packaging surface a trace of artistic process that mirrors the creative activities the pencils themselves will enable. The multilingual typography acknowledges the global circulation of creative tools and educational materials, suggesting that artistic practice transcends linguistic boundaries even as local languages provide necessary practical information about contents, usage, and safety. The open-display configuration of the central container represents a strategic design decision that transforms packaging from barrier into frame, allowing potential users to assess color range and quality before purchase while creating a visually compelling presentation that celebrates rather than conceals the product, embodying a philosophy of transparency and confidence in material quality. The spectrum band printed across multiple surfaces functions as both decorative element and educational tool, suggesting the chromatic possibilities contained within while providing a visual organizing principle that guides the eye across surfaces and creates continuity across the modular system. What emerges is a packaging solution that respects its users—whether children discovering the joys of color application or adults maintaining creative practices—by offering beauty, clarity, and thoughtful material expression that elevates everyday artistic tools into objects worthy of care and contemplation, inviting consideration of how the containers that deliver creative materials into our lives might themselves participate in the culture of making, beauty, and visual exploration they serve.

Production Technology
The packaging combines premium white cardstock and art paper, with its surface featuring a matte lamination with a delicate touch to enhance both visual appeal and durability. The internal support structure is made of eco friendly corrugated cardboard, lightweight yet compression resistant. The four color high fidelity printing process, overlaid with spot colors and spot UV, faithfully reproduces subtle gradients and intricate pattern layers.
Design Challenge
The challenge was blending traditional patterns and abstract geometry for harmony of classicism and modernity. The packaging, through systematic visual organization and careful compositional refinement, pairs elegant classical colors with thoughtful negative space to showcase Eastern charm and evoke deep resonance. Meanwhile, geometric elements such as circles, squares, and triangles, coupled with a series of abstract geometric IP characters, add a modern, simple, yet approachable touch.
Project Duration
The project started in Jiangxi in December 2025 and finished in February 2026.
Operation Flow
The packaging consists of a tiered base and a lid. The base with secure slots keeps pencils neat and stable for easy access and storage. The lid contains soft foam to protect pencil tips, while its indentations serve as a phone stand or temporary resting places for pencils in use, avoiding repeated insertion and removal. A sharpener on the back allows quick pencil sharpening. The lid also boasts horizontal locking slots that fit snugly with the base, preventing accidental opening.
Research
With the expanding community of drawing enthusiasts, creative tools must balance practicality and aesthetic value. The packaging optimizes its structure and appearance, becoming an ideal desktop companion. Its tiered structure, secure slots, and protective foam ensure organized storage and easy access. Multifunctional indentations meet various drawing needs. The integration of the 24 solar terms, Jingdezhen porcelain painting patterns, and abstract art exudes Eastern charm and modern simplicity.
Inspiration
The packaging, inspired by the 24 solar terms, pairs each solar term with a corresponding seasonal flower. It incorporates traditional flower patterns from Jingdezhen porcelain to create exquisite, elegant floral motifs, each boasting a dedicated soft color palette. Also introducing modern abstract art, it deconstructs and reconstructs geometric elements such as circles and squares, resulting in an artistic expression that embodies the essence of Eastern aesthetics and modern visual warmth.
