About Jinshan Smile Dental Group
Jinshan Smile is a four story dental clinic interior in Taipei that covers 875 square meters. Each floor has a distinct identity that guides visitors to the right treatment area. The first floor is an open reception with terrazzo floors, high ceilings, and an LED wall for events. The second floor holds a transparent laboratory with clean white lines. The third floor uses warm tones, curves, and banquette seating. The fourth floor uses dark marble and deep wood. All treatment rooms are private suites.
Yi-Ling Syu's interior design for this dental healthcare facility demonstrates how contemporary minimalist spatial strategies can transform clinical environments into welcoming sanctuaries that honor patient dignity while maintaining professional rigor, situating the work within broader movements toward wellness-centered healthcare design that recognizes spatial quality as fundamental to healing experiences rather than mere functional backdrop. The compositional achievement rests in sophisticated material editing that permits only essential elements to occupy the visual field, each surface and object selected for contribution to overall harmonic balance, the discipline of this reduction amplifying impact of remaining choices including warm bronze display systems that introduce domestic intimacy and carefully proportioned vertical partitions that subdivide space without creating oppressive enclosure. The chromatic intelligence demonstrates nuanced understanding of color psychology applied to healthcare contexts, wherein the predominant cool-neutral palette of soft grays and pale concrete induces physiological calm while bronze metallic accents provide psychological warmth, preventing the sterile austerity often associated with medical environments and instead suggesting refined hospitality akin to contemporary boutique residential interiors. Technical merit appears particularly evident in the layered lighting design that employs multiple fixture types and mounting strategies to achieve even ambient illumination suitable for clinical precision while simultaneously creating atmospheric depth through accent lighting within display niches and linear cove elements, this multifaceted approach revealing sophisticated understanding of how illumination shapes spatial perception and emotional response. The terrazzo flooring selection demonstrates historical awareness, invoking enduring architectural traditions associated with institutional longevity and care while employing large-format contemporary installation that maintains clean geometric clarity, the material's scattered aggregate pattern introducing subtle visual texture that animates surfaces without competing for attention with furniture and architectural features. The modular seating systems suggest attention to diverse user needs, accommodating solitary individuals seeking privacy alongside groups requiring proximity, the low horizontal profiles avoiding imposing mass while channeled upholstery detailing provides haptic interest and body support, fabric selections in soft dove gray offering tactile warmth contrasting productively with harder architectural surfaces. The vertical partition elements function as spatial hinges, their slender proportions and rhythmic fenestration maintaining visual connectivity across zones while defining territorial boundaries appropriate to healthcare privacy requirements, black metal framing providing crisp geometric definition that emphasizes design intentionality rather than functional necessity alone. One might observe how this environment invites contemplation of healthcare space as opportunity for aesthetic enrichment rather than resigned pragmatism, suggesting possibilities for elevating everyday environments through disciplined material choices and spatial intelligence that respects human psychological need for beauty alongside functional accommodation.

- Unique Properties
- The project departs from conventional dental design, drawing inspiration from hotels, cafes, and galleries. The first-floor reception features terrazzo floors, metal displays, four-meter ceilings, and an LED wall for events. The second floor showcases a transparent lab with clean white lines. The third floor evokes a cafe with warm tones, curves, and banquette seating, while the fourth floor uses deep wood and art for gallery-like sophistication. Hygiene and tailored lighting ensure comfort and professionalism throughout.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- Spanning four floors and 875 m2, the clinic is connected by a private elevator, with a dedicated lobby on each floor linking to waiting areas. Fire doors define zones while preserving intuitive flow. All treatment rooms are private suites for confidentiality and noise control. The first floor serves as reception and waiting, and can host events with flexible furniture arrangements, allowing future reconfiguration without compromising function or circulation.

- Production Technology
- The design merges medical logic with refined materials, including leather, titanium-coated sheets, wood, stone, sculpted white surfaces, antibacterial laminate, and mineral paint. Terrazzo is used professionally on the first-floor floors and walls. The second floor combines light surfaces and clean lines for depth. The third floor blends soft curves, warm tones, and metallic accents for cosmetic dentistry, while the fourth floor uses dark marble and tailored lighting to evoke serenity and trust.
- Design Challenge
- The main challenge was balancing aesthetic goals with strict medical standards. Seamless flooring demanded precise welding for levelness and durability. Clinical spaces impose stricter codes than commercial interiors, so reducing the institutional look without compromising requirements was critical. Material and labor shortages added complexity, requiring close coordination to achieve a design that harmonized style, compliance, and constructability.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in August 2024 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- Each floor's distinct visual identity guides visitors intuitively to their treatment type, enhancing navigability and departmental clarity. The third-floor cafe-inspired ambiance appeals to younger patients, while the fourth floor's serene tone attracts mature patients. Staff praises the design for storage, lighting, and circulation. The project was planned from the perspective of assistants and physicians to ensure functionality aligns seamlessly with daily workflow.
