About Imperium Residential Apartment

Imperium is a residential apartment interior with an area of 225 square meters, located in Varna, Bulgaria. The design combines practical functionality with visual coherence. Decorative plasters cover the walls, and the floors are finished with natural wood. Built-in linear lighting is applied throughout, and the furniture is faced with natural veneer. Countertops and backsplashes are made of Laminam. Flush doors were produced with a specially selected manufacturer. The interior supports daily routines and offers a calm and comfortable home.

Rumyana Kostadinova's Imperium Residential Apartment exemplifies contemporary residential design's evolution toward spaces that function simultaneously as comfortable living environments and carefully curated aesthetic experiences, demonstrating sophisticated material literacy and compositional refinement within the compact spatial constraints characteristic of urban apartment living. The design achieves notable success in establishing visual hierarchy through the strategic deployment of vertical wood-clad elements that organize the open-plan space into legible functional zones while maintaining spatial flow and perceptual continuity, a compositional strategy that recalls modernist spatial planning principles while incorporating the warmer material palette and decorative richness associated with contemporary cosmopolitan interiors. The chromatic restraint evidenced in the neutral foundation of warm grays, taupes, and honey-toned woods creates a sophisticated backdrop that allows accent elements including the dramatic figurative artwork and metallic accessories to register with appropriate emphasis, suggesting careful consideration of visual weight distribution and the relationship between architectural shell and furnishing layers. The integration of display niches with internal illumination demonstrates thoughtful detailing, transforming functional storage into aesthetic features that contribute ambient light while showcasing objects of personal significance, a gesture that elevates everyday domestic architecture toward gallery-like presentation while maintaining residential warmth through material choices and scale. The furnishing selection favors contemporary forms with organic edges and soft upholstery that invite tactile engagement and comfortable use, tempering the architectural crispness with yielding surfaces and biomorphic shapes that introduce human-scaled softness, while the lighting strategy employs multiple sources at varied heights to create dimensional complexity and atmospheric modulation throughout the daily cycle. The prominent artwork depicting a figure in elaborate traditional dress and ornamental adornment introduces cultural depth and serves as both visual anchor and potential conversation prompt, suggesting the inhabitant's engagement with artistic traditions and aesthetic narratives that extend beyond purely contemporary design vocabularies, enriching the space with layers of meaning and historical resonance. The visible adjacency of kitchen functions with wine storage and integrated appliances speaks to contemporary open-plan living's dissolution of traditional room boundaries, creating fluid domestic landscapes where cooking, dining, and lounging occupy continuous though differentiated zones, a spatial model that facilitates both solitary retreat and social gathering. One might contemplate how this interior environment negotiates between the desire for serene minimalist clarity and the equally valid impulse toward personal expression through collected objects and culturally significant imagery, asking what such carefully composed domestic spaces reveal about contemporary understandings of home as simultaneously functional infrastructure, aesthetic statement, and repository of personal narrative.

Production Technology
Decorative plasters have been used for the walls, natural wood flooring for the floors, built-in linear lighting, natural veneer for the furniture, and the countertops and backsplashes are made of Laminam
Design Challenge
The property features underfloor heating, natural hardwood flooring, and the highest-grade paints and plasters. Natural materials such as stone and natural veneer have been used.
All of this creates challenges during both the design and implementation phases. In the end, only one thing truly matters – that the client is satisfied and feels the home as their own.
Project Duration
The project started in March 2025 and finished in February 2026 in Varna, Bulgaria
Operation Flow
Interior is not merely a backdrop for human activity - it actively communicates with the people who inhabit it. Through form, color, light, materials, and spatial organization, it creates emotions, guides behavior, and builds identity.
Research
The team conducted an in-depth study of the method for manufacturing and installing flush doors. After we were selected by the client, we had to assess whether they were compatible with the project and whether we would be able to achieve the desired result. After several months of searching, we found the right factory and believe that we achieved an excellent outcome.
Inspiration
The project is driven by the aim to create a space that transcends its functional purpose and expresses the identity, values, and way of living of its occupants. The interior is approached not simply as a composition of furnishings and materials, but as an environment where daily life unfolds a setting that encourages inspiration, fosters a sense of comfort, and accommodates shared moments.
