About Narangam and Cardamom Heritage Liqueur

The packaging design presents two liqueur variants through a cohesive visual architecture rooted in heritage inspired detailing and contemporary clarity. Distinct orange and green color systems support immediate variant recognition, while structured typography and ornamental borders reinforce hierarchy. A vintage distillery illustration combined with botanical elements communicates origin and ingredient identity. Balanced composition, controlled spacing, and subtle embossing cues enhance premium perception, creating a unified product family with strong shelf visibility and timeless appeal.

Dheeraj Bangur's design for Narangam and Cardamom Heritage Liqueur demonstrates sophisticated visual intelligence in contemporary beverage packaging, positioning these containers within a lineage of heritage branding that honors historical distilling traditions while addressing present-day luxury consumer expectations through refined aesthetic choices and meticulous production values. The composition presents two flavor variants employing chromatic distinction as the primary differentiating strategy, the warm burnt orange spine and edges of the Narangam package dialoguing with the cool emerald green of the Cardamom variant, this chromatic pairing establishing immediate shelf recognition while suggesting the sensory profiles of their respective botanical ingredients through culturally resonant color-flavor associations. The shared architectural vocabulary uniting both packages speaks to brand coherence and family resemblance, the pristine white principal panels serving as neutral grounds upon which delicate golden cartouches frame central pictorial narratives rendered in sepia-toned engraving aesthetic that evokes nineteenth-century trade lithography and Victorian product illustration traditions. These industrial vignettes depicting multi-story distillery buildings with prominent chimney stacks function as heritage signifiers, anchoring the contemporary product in manufacturing history and suggesting continuity of craft knowledge across temporal spans, the architectural rendering style suggesting both documentary precision and romantic nostalgia for pre-industrial artisanal production methods. The foreground botanical elements clustered citrus spheres for Narangam, elongated cardamom pods for the green variant serve dual communicative functions, identifying primary flavor components with visual clarity while reinforcing the natural ingredient sourcing and botanical authenticity central to premium spirits positioning. Typography demonstrates classical hierarchy principles, the commanding blackletter "MAHARANI MAHANSAR" masthead establishing authoritative presence while the refined copperplate "Heritage Liqueur" subtitle introduces elegance and tradition, flavor names rendered at maximum scale and chromatic intensity ensuring immediate product identification across competitive retail environments. The technical execution evidenced through precise registration of metallic inks, crisp die-cutting, and sophisticated surface treatments combining matte substrates with selective varnish applications communicates manufacturing quality and attention to craft that mirrors the artisanal distilling narrative the imagery promotes. Surface treatments and material choices suggest premium paperboard with coatings providing both visual refinement and functional protection, the tactile experience of handling these packages designed to reinforce luxury positioning through substantial weight and smooth finish. The compositional decision to present both variants in symmetrical pairing allows viewers to appreciate the systematic chromatic coding strategy while recognizing the unified brand architecture, the slight three-quarter orientation revealing dimensional depth and shelf presence that static frontal presentation would diminish. This packaging approach participates in broader contemporary design discourse surrounding heritage branding, artisanal manufacturing narratives, and the visual communication of quality through restrained ornament and historical reference, the work suggesting questions about how contemporary luxury goods employ historical aesthetic vocabularies to construct authenticity, how chromatic systems organize consumer choice, and how packaging design mediates between manufacturing reality and consumer aspiration, inviting consideration of the complex symbolic work premium packaging performs in constructing product meaning and value perception.

Production Technology
The label was developed using a precision vector-based design system to ensure scalability and print clarity. High-resolution engraving illustrations were digitally rendered to replicate vintage etching aesthetics. The shield contour was die-cut for structural distinction. Production utilizes premium textured label stock with hot foil stamping, micro-embossing, and spot UV detailing. Offset printing with controlled color calibration ensures depth in orange and green tones while maintaining gold foil brilliance.
Design Challenge
The primary challenge was balancing deep-rooted royal heritage with a contemporary premium spirit identity without appearing outdated or ornamental. Historically rich motifs had to be refined for modern minimalism. Regulatory label compliance, alcohol laws, and print production limitations required precise hierarchy and spatial control. Technically, achieving engraving depth with foil and embossing while maintaining clarity on textured stock demanded extensive prototyping and color calibration.
Project Duration
The project started in August 2025 in Jaipur and finished in October 2025 in Jaipur
Operation Flow
The rigid box opens with a smooth top-lid mechanism, creating a ceremonial unboxing moment. The bottle is securely positioned within a precision die-cut insert for stability and protection. The embossed shield label enhances tactile engagement, while the structured visual hierarchy ensures clear readability of brand, variant, and technical details, delivering a refined and intuitive consumption experience.
Research
Qualitative and comparative design research was conducted to position heritage Indian liqueurs within the premium global spirits segment. The objective was to translate royal legacy into contemporary luxury packaging. Methodology included market benchmarking, shelf analysis, and cultural motif studies. Data was gathered through retail audits, consumer feedback, and material sampling. Participants included spirit consumers and distributors. Results revealed demand for strong heritage cues with modern clarity. Insights led to a shield structure, bold flavor coding, and tactile finishes, enhancing brand differentiation, shelf visibility, and premium perception in real market conditions.
Inspiration
The design is inspired by the historic distillery architecture of Maharani Mahansar and the natural richness of Indian cardamom and orange orchards. The shield silhouette reflects royal insignia and protection of heritage, while vintage engraving-style illustrations reference traditional craftsmanship. Bold flavor-led typography, combined with regal gold borders and intricate detailing, expresses authenticity, legacy, and the premium character of a triple-distilled heritage liqueur.
