About Radiant Bloom Public Art
Radiant Bloom is a public sculpture created for an architectural void. The work is made of high strength stainless steel with a fully mirror polished finish. Multiple curved elements form intersecting archways that recall a fountain and a blooming flower. The sculpture spans a circular ceiling void and extends into a ground level water feature with a transparent glass pool base. Daylight passes through the pool into the underground space below. A programmable LED lighting system adds changing colour. The mirrored surface reflects the sky and the surrounding landscape.
Kuo Kuo-Hsiang's Radiant Bloom Public Art represents a significant achievement within contemporary environmental sculpture, demonstrating the expressive potential that emerges when organic morphology encounters advanced fabrication technologies and monumental scale ambitions, positioning the work within a rich lineage of biomorphic abstraction that extends from early-twentieth-century organic modernism through parametric design's computational exploration of natural forms, the installation appears to engage deeply with questions of how industrial materials and digital design methodologies can capture and honor the essential vitality and formal intelligence embedded within botanical structures, translating the ephemeral beauty of a flower in bloom into a permanent statement rendered in perforated metal that will weather and evolve across seasons and years, the compositional achievement is immediately evident in the sculpture's radial organization, where multiple arcing elements achieve perfect balance while maintaining dynamic asymmetry in their specific curvatures and lengths, each petal form calibrated to create a unified floral silhouette when viewed frontally yet revealing complex spatial layering and interpenetration from other vantage points, the technical sophistication manifests particularly in the intricate perforation pattern that transforms heavy industrial material into a structure that breathes and interacts with light, the regular yet organic distribution of voids creating a surface that reads simultaneously as solid and permeable, structural and delicate, grounded and ethereal, the pattern itself suggesting extensive digital modeling to achieve its regularity while maintaining naturalistic irregularity in the size and distribution of individual apertures, evoking the cellular organization of plant tissue or the random-yet-ordered distribution of light through a forest canopy, the chromatic strategy proves equally thoughtful, as the warm metallic tones establish dialogue with both the golden hour sky and the earth-bound water feature below, the sculpture functioning chromatically as a mediator between ground and atmosphere, between reflection and radiance, the decision to employ materials that will continue oxidizing and transforming introduces temporal dimension to the work, acknowledging that public sculpture exists not as static object but as evolving presence that participates in environmental processes of change, the monumental scale elevates the work beyond decorative or ornamental function toward the realm of landmark and gathering point, a vertical marker within the urban landscape that provides orientation and identity to its surroundings while creating sheltered space below where visitors might pause and contemplate, the integration with the water feature extends the sculpture's presence beyond its physical boundaries, as reflections double the visual complexity and introduce another layer of transformation through the movement of water surfaces responding to wind and light, thematically the work appears to explore the persistence of natural beauty and organic logic within contexts dominated by rectilinear architecture and engineered systems, the flourishing gesture of the bloom asserting itself upward and outward despite its industrial materiality, suggesting resilience, adaptation, and the irrepressible drive toward growth and display that characterizes living systems, one might observe how the sculpture creates multiple experiential registers depending on proximity and time of day, functioning as distant landmark and icon when viewed from afar yet revealing intricate detail and nuanced surface articulation during close examination, while the changing light throughout the day continually recomposes the patterns of illumination and shadow that animate the perforated surfaces, what questions might this fusion of botanical form and industrial craft invite viewers to consider about the relationships between nature and culture, between ephemeral organic beauty and enduring constructed monuments, between the mathematical elegance underlying both natural growth patterns and human design systems?
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- Crafted from high-strength, fully mirror-polished stainless steel, the sculpture's form evokes an ethereal, organic canopy. Multiple curved elements create a series of intersecting archways, defining an open yet intimate spatial threshold. The installation spans a circular ceiling void and extends through a ground-level water feature, becoming an integral part of the architectural system. Its reflective surface captures the constantly changing sky and landscape, ensuring a dynamic dialogue between the built structure and its atmosphere.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The sculpture measures W470 cm x D470 cm x H500 cm with a total weight of approximately 2 metric tons. It is supported by a precision-engineered five-axis radial steel foundation, designed for on-site segmented fabrication and crane-assisted assembly. Key technical properties include cross-level spatial penetration and a multi-perspective viewing system that optimizes the observer's experience from various vantage points. The installation is engineered to produce sophisticated water reflection and light refraction effects, creating a sense of simultaneous existence across multiple spatial dimensions. For international logistics, the work is prepared in modular segments to ensure efficient handling and structural integrity during transit and final installation.

- Production Technology
- The production of this installation utilizes high-strength stainless steel with a meticulously executed, fully mirror-polished finish. Its structural integrity is anchored by a sophisticated five-axis radial load-bearing system and cross-level suspended integration, supported by advanced structural load and safety calculations. The design seamlessly integrates with its environment through a specialized water feature penetration system and a reinforced transparent glass pool base, which facilitates the transmission of natural daylight into underground spaces. This realization required seamless collaboration between sculptural design, structural engineering, and architectural coordination to balance aesthetic lightness with robust stability. An integrated, programmable RGBW LED lighting system further enhances the work, enabling vibrant color transitions that extend the sculpture's presence and establish a dynamic dialogue between structure, light, and atmosphere.
- Design Challenge
- The primary challenge was balancing structural mass with visual weightlessness. Obstacles included complex cross-level load calculations, precision alignment with the architectural void, and ensuring seamless waterproof integration with the water feature. The project successfully transforms physical mass into perceived elevation, merging engineering precision with poetic expression.
- Project Duration
- The project started in March 2023 and finished with installation in Taichung,Taiwan in October 2025
- Operation Flow
- The interaction is experiential rather than mechanical. Visitors are invited to look upward from the underground level to witness the sky through the sculpture or observe the installation from above through the water feature. As sunlight passes through the glass-bottomed pool, the sculpture transforms throughout the day, generating a temporal dialogue between structure and perception. The artwork exists not only physically but perceptually - within the dimension of light and reflection.
- Research
- This project investigates the integration of large-scale public sculpture within architectural voids. Key research focuses include executing a two-ton cross-level suspended structure without compromising safety, and utilizing water/glass refraction to create a secondary visual dimension. "Radiant Bloom" demonstrates how sculpture can transcend spatial confinement and transform an underground space into a luminous, psychologically uplifting environment.
- Inspiration
- The conceptual inspiration derives from the dual imagery of a fountain and a blooming flower. This biomorphic sculpture, a harmonious fusion of natural forms and advanced material science, serves as a dynamic focal point in its environment. The fountain represents perpetual vitality, while the blossoming flower symbolizes harmony and renewal. "Radiant Bloom" embodies the wish that life may flow like a fountain - continuous and resilient - and bloom like a flower under sunlight, bringing hope and enduring beauty to its surroundings.
