About Jardo Residential House
The Jardo project illustrates the designer's quest for a balance between architecture, art, and design. The designer's fascination with sculpture had a significant influence on the final result, which is reflected in the furniture and staircase designs. A major challenge for him was manipulating the proportions and boundaries of the rooms to eliminate conventional solutions. He focused on ecology and sustainable development. He leveraged the benefits of local craftsmanship and local manufacturers working with wood, stone, glass, and natural cladding materials.
Maciej Basałygo's residential interior design demonstrates sophisticated spatial orchestration where contemporary architectural thinking engages domestic program through volumetric generosity, material refinement, and compositional clarity, situating the work within broader trajectories of open-plan residential design that emerged from modernist spatial liberation yet inflects this inheritance with parametric formal vocabulary and contemporary material technologies. The intervention appears to embrace principles of spatial continuity and functional fluidity characteristic of post-war modernist domestic architecture while introducing sculptural gesture through the commanding staircase element that transcends mere functional circulation to become the spatial and aesthetic protagonist of the composition, its organic curved geometry suggesting digital design methodologies and contemporary fabrication capabilities while its warm material execution maintains haptic invitation and domestic appropriateness. The chromatic strategy demonstrates considerable sophistication in its restraint, deploying a deliberately limited palette where warm wood tones provide organic resonance and psychological warmth against cool neutral grounds, creating temperature contrast that enhances spatial legibility while maintaining tonal unity within middle-key range that avoids dramatic lighting effects in favor of even ambient luminosity suggesting serene domesticity rather than theatrical display. Technical execution reveals careful attention to detail resolution and material junction conditions where disparate materials meet with precision suggesting quality fabrication and installation, while the integration of multiple lighting systems including natural daylight management through sheer curtain diffusion, ambient recessed fixtures, indirect cove illumination, and focused accent lighting demonstrates layered thinking about illumination as both functional necessity and atmospheric generator. The compositional achievement lies partly in the successful negotiation of competing spatial demands where the desire for dramatic vertical volume and the need for intimate domestic scale are reconciled through careful furnishing placement, material warmth, and human-scale detailing that prevents the generous spatial envelope from feeling overwhelming or institutionally scaled, while the transparent glass stair balustrade preserves visual connection between levels without solid barrier that would fragment the unified spatial experience. The work seems to engage ongoing conversations within contemporary residential design regarding the relationship between public and private zones, between circulation as mere functional necessity and circulation as architectural experience, and between minimal aesthetic restraint and material richness, arriving at synthesis that honors multiple values simultaneously through calibrated design decisions across scale from overall spatial organization down to detail resolution. One might observe how the staircase functions simultaneously as sculptural object demanding aesthetic contemplation, as functional infrastructure enabling vertical movement, and as spatial organizer establishing relationship between upper and lower realms, embodying the integration of pragmatic and poetic dimensions that distinguishes accomplished architectural design from mere technical competency or aesthetic styling. The extensive window wall with its diffusing textile treatment suggests engagement with biophilic design principles recognizing human psychological benefit from visual connection to natural landscape and natural light variation, while the material palette emphasizing natural wood, metal, glass, and textile creates tactile and visual variety within overall aesthetic coherence. The work invites consideration of how domestic interior architecture might balance competing desires for spatial drama and intimate comfort, for visual connection and acoustic privacy, for material warmth and formal clarity, for individual expression and timeless restraint, questions that have animated residential design discourse across multiple generations yet remain freshly relevant as material technologies, fabrication capabilities, and cultural expectations continue evolving.

- Unique Properties
- The design deliberately limits the range of materials and colors used, which is a key element in creating new functional interior scenarios. The design demonstrates the optimization of the composition of forms and planes, used as a means to accentuate individual rooms and highlight the quality of the selected finishing materials. The lack of obvious boundaries between partitions creates a sense of visual continuity in the design concept and can serve as a subtle guide through the home. The abstract mezzanine staircase serves as the architectural focal point and the heart of the home’s ecosystem.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The thorough renovation project covered approximately 200 square meters of space on two floors. The floors, plaster, ceilings, installations, windows, stairs, and all furnishings were replaced. New eco-friendly and energy-efficient materials were introduced.

- Production Technology
- To achieve the desired results, the project relied on an in-depth technical analysis and placed a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability and eco-friendly practices. It leveraged the strengths of local craftsmanship and local manufacturers. Particular attention was paid to custom-designed details and unique interior elements crafted from wood, stone, glass, and natural finishes.
- Design Challenge
- A major design challenge was manipulating the proportions and boundaries of the rooms to eliminate solutions that are characteristic and typical, particularly when it comes to concealing modern installation technologies. Only the preparation of precise construction drawings, coordination, and direct supervision of the work on-site ensured that the design objectives could be achieved.
- Project Duration
- The facility is located in Gniezno, Poland. The project began in 2019 and, with interruptions, continued until 2024.
- Operation Flow
- A new aesthetic and architectural context has been proposed for the occupants of this space, allowing for a continuous interpretation of the emotional codes developed during the design phase. Care was taken to ensure the use of materials with natural characteristics. The availability and variability of natural and artificial light were determined. Communication rules were defined so that the interiors would better foster the most important family relationships. LED lighting was diversified to highlight the most important functions and visual elements of the family space.
- Research
- An analysis of the research shows that investors and designers are consciously striving to improve quality of life, taking into account not only aesthetic and spatial qualities, but above all their integration with eco-friendly solutions aimed at reducing the carbon footprint and energy consumption. One of the most important preliminary tasks of the project was to collect basic preliminary data on energy consumption patterns and the potential for using alternative and sustainable energy sources. The result was the optimization of functional, spatial, material and execution solutions.
- Inspiration
- The project illustrates the search for the perfect balance between architecture, art, and design. It is the result of creative discussions with the clients, which led to an analysis of their favorite forms and natural phenomena, including color schemes. The designer’s fascination with sculpture also had a significant influence on the final result, which was reflected in the furniture and staircase designs, as well as in the selection of design accents in the lighting fixtures and decorative accessories.
