About Urla Guest House

Urla Guest House is a spatial narrative where boundaries dissolve and fluid movement defines the architectural experience. Instead of solid walls, permeable layers allow light, air, and time to breathe through the structure. The raw simplicity of micro concrete contrasts with the warmth of natural wood, establishing a restrained language rooted in the landscape. Spaces connect seamlessly, inviting exploration where each transition reveals new perspectives. As daylight dances across surfaces, the interior becomes a living sanctuary shaped by atmosphere, material, and poetic continuity.

Aynur Kirduk's Urla Guest House presents a compelling study in contemporary residential interior design that synthesizes international minimalist traditions with material warmth and biophilic sensitivity, achieving spatial refinement while maintaining welcoming domestic character. This living environment demonstrates sophisticated understanding of horizontal spatial organization, where parallel planes create visual calm and rhythmic structure: the floating media console establishes a strong datum line that organizes surrounding elements, echoed above by the recessed ceiling cove and below by the low-profile seating arrangement, generating a layered spatial experience that rewards sustained observation. The chromatic strategy reveals particular accomplishment in its navigation between chromatic restraint and sensory warmth, deploying a carefully edited palette of earth tones, warm woods, and metallic accents that create visual coherence without monotony, while strategic introduction of living greenery provides essential chromatic counterpoint and biophilic connection. Technically, the integration of multiple lighting systems displays notable finesse, combining ambient architectural illumination concealed within horizontal recesses, sculptural accent lighting through the distinctive multi-arm chandelier, and focused task lighting from recessed ceiling fixtures to create layered luminosity that adapts environmental character across temporal cycles. The floating media console exemplifies refined millwork execution, its continuous horizontal grain pattern and precise drawer articulation suggesting custom fabrication and attention to joinery detail, while the material selection of honey-toned wood introduces natural warmth that anchors the otherwise neutral palette. Particularly effective passages include the threshold between living and storage zones, where the wine display cabinet transforms functional requirement into visual feature through backlit glass shelving and bronze metallic detailing, and the window treatment's play between transparency and opacity, where horizontal wood blinds filter natural light into rhythmic striations while maintaining visual connection to exterior landscape suggested by glimpsed vegetation. Thematically, this interior explores contemporary domestic retreat as curated experience, where spatial clarity and material quality combine to elevate everyday dwelling into contemplative practice, suggesting that residential environments can achieve sophistication through restraint rather than excess, precision rather than ornament. The composition engages enduring questions of balance between openness and enclosure, transparency and privacy, warmth and minimalism, arriving at resolutions that honor multiple values simultaneously rather than privileging singular aesthetic doctrine. One might observe how the designer navigates the tension between display and concealment, with certain elements—the media technology, wine collection, decorative objects—carefully framed and illuminated, while infrastructure and utilitarian functions recede into shadow or integrated cabinetry, proposing a domestic aesthetic that celebrates selected aspects of daily life while maintaining overall visual serenity. How does this interior environment invite inhabitants and guests to experience domestic space as both functional backdrop and contemplative setting, and what role does the interplay of natural and artificial illumination play in transforming spatial character across different times of day and modes of occupation?

Unique Properties
Urla Guest House is conceived as a refined boutique extension of the main villa, offering an independent yet cohesive living experience. Its open-plan layout, expansive openings, and solid wood separators ensure spatial continuity and fluid transitions. The integration of micro concrete and natural wood surfaces establishes a warm, modern atmosphere, while the design emphasizes permeability, natural light, and a strong connection to its surroundings.
Dimensions & Packaging
The project comprises 60 square meters of interior space and 65 square meters of outdoor areas, including a pool, lounge, and landscaped garden. A ceiling height of 320 cm, combined with expansive openings, enhances spatial perception and daylight continuity. Micro concrete and natural wood establish a durable, contemporary material language, while custom designed furniture and integrated elements ensure cohesion, functionality, and a refined architectural identity.

Production Technology
Natural and durable materials are prioritized to ensure longevity and timeless appeal. Micro concrete is applied on floors and selected walls to achieve a seamless and continuous surface. Natural wood elements and custom-designed separators introduce warmth and spatial definition. Precise craftsmanship, refined detailing, and controlled material transitions preserve the integrity of the design while enhancing its tactile and visual quality.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was to design a compact yet spacious environment without compromising comfort or functionality. Instead of conventional solid walls, carefully crafted wood separators maintain visual continuity while subtly defining different zones. Establishing a strong connection between interior and exterior spaces within a limited footprint required precise spatial planning, resulting in a fluid, cohesive, and highly functional living experience that enhances both usability and overall spatial quality.
Project Duration
Located in Urla, Izmir, Turkey, the guest house is designed as an extension of the main villa. Developed simultaneously, it ensures architectural continuity. The project is planned to meet functional and aesthetic needs and will be implemented during the construction phase.
Operation Flow
The layout is designed to provide a fluid and intuitive spatial experience. Kitchenette, living, and sleeping areas are organized within a continuous open-plan scheme, ensuring functional clarity and visual continuity. Solid wood separators subtly define zones without interrupting the overall flow, while expansive openings enhance the connection to the garden and pool, allowing natural light and landscape to become integral elements of a relaxed and cohesive living environment.
Research
The Urla Guest House is conceived as a refined living environment that balances privacy and openness within a natural setting. Interior and outdoor spaces are treated as a unified whole, supporting a seamless and integrated lifestyle. Natural materials, soft spatial transitions, and filtered light enhance continuity and spatial depth, while the compact layout is carefully optimized to maximize comfort, functionality, and an efficient use of space without compromising design integrity.
Inspiration
Inspired by the calm rhythm of Aegean lifestyle and the natural character of Urla. The design balances simplicity openness and a strong connection with nature. It complements the main villa while maintaining its own identity. Natural materials soft transitions and filtered light create a serene and refined atmosphere.
