About Follow Me Sculptural Vase
Follow Me is a sculptural vase designed to support the arrangement of cut flowers. The form is inspired by the peacock, with an upright body and a pair of wings. The vase is made of three pieces, including two detachable wing pieces that are perforated in different patterns. The semi open form allows air circulation around the stems and lets water be added daily without disturbing the arrangement. The user selects one wing piece, anchors it to the body and follows the openings to create a pattern. The intent is to extend the life of cut flowers.

- Unique Properties
- Follow Me is a sculpture which functions as a vase. The idea is to make the vase take part in arrangement and conditioning of cut flowers. This vase is a set of three pieces with semi open form to allow air circulation around the stems keeping them moisture free and to allow users to add water daily without disturbing the arrangement. The two detachable wing pieces are perforated in a certain pattern to aid the arrangement. The vase provides aids while the flowers complete the overall form, forming a complementary pair.

- Design Challenge
- The challenge was to solve a conflicting criterion and bring the bird form and functions together. For easy adding of water, wide mouth is good but it does not provide enough aid for arranging flowers in pattern. Additional aid may be needed for arrangement. The design has been developed as semi open form with three pieces separating the conflicting functions. The perforated wing part serves as the aid, while user can easily add water below the wings. The large gap also allows air circulation.
- Operation Flow
- User has to choose a wing piece out of the two options according to the profile of the openings or perforation. The user can anchor it to the body of the vase with the help of the anchoring points provided in the body and then he can add water in to it. Its ready for arranging flowers. Now, the user can follow the profile of the openings or skip in between to create a pattern in the arrangement.
- Research
- From study on conditioning of flowers, it is found that flowers suck lots of water and one has to keep adding water as needed. And while doing this, arrangement is disturbed or water is spilled. Enclosed form of vases with water creates the moist environment and increases bacterial growth. A large mouth is convenient for adding water but do not provide enough aid for arrangement in pattern. These lead to design a vase which increases post harvest life instead of just a container to hold flowers.
- Inspiration
- The form of Follow Me is inspired from the bird Peacock. This bird has a unique tail which forms a semi circular pattern when it fans its highly elongated upper tail covert feathers. This inspired me to develop the form of the vase as a bird with long upright tail and a pair of wings with perforated back to provide support for cut flowers. The intent is to make the flowers a part of the form.

Design Interview about Follow Me Sculptural Vase
The main idea is to design a vase which aids in flower arrangement and also improves the post harvest life of cut flowers.
I wanted the vase to aid flower arrangement in different patterns and make addition of water easy without disturbing the arrangement and at the same time to allow air circulation around the stems.
I would like to commercialize it.
This particular concept was designed for those who love flower arrangement. I decided to pursuit an inspiration.
I wanted to provide arrangement aids so that users can arranged in a pattern. So, the bird Peacock inspired me to developed the form into a bird with long upright tail and a detachable wing piece which has perforations in a pattern. The semi open form also helps in air circulation for reducing bacterial growth.
Flower lovers.
Follow Me does not only hold flowers. It provides aids for arranging flowers in a pattern and also improves the post harvest life of cut flowers by reducing bacterial growth around the stems due to semi open form. Water or chemical solutions can be easily added below the wing piece without disturbing the flower arrangement. And more over the vase has been designed to be a functional sculpture.
"Follow Me" means follow the patterns on the wing piece to arrange the flowers.

I felt it was a good design.
