Interview with Idan Herbet on E Drum Kinetic Electronic Drums Show

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
The main principle of this design is to create a powerful and unforgettable experience, one that the spectator will remember. The design concept is based on the integration of sound, light and motion, requiring the spectator to activate different senses at once. The source of inspiration for this project is the Gyro 360 Hover Device, an entertainment attraction used to simulate hovering/floating. We adopted the idea of the mechanism for our purpose.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
The main focal point in our design was to create a new, interactive connection between the spectator and the show. The dynamic, 360-degree sound and light installation is activated by playing the drums, creating a synchronized energy between the performer and his audience in a shared experience.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
As COVID-19 is preventing social gatherings, we are working on new performances, and will be ready to turn our lights on once again, when possible, and invite our audiences into an unforgettable journey of the senses.
How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
The design process and production of this product took place over a year of intensive collaboration with today’s leading minds in design, lighting, electricity, programming, music and drumming. Together, with the individual efforts from each one of us, we made this dream come true.
Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
This product was commissioned by Cochavi-Klein Light Collective and Teta Music Production. The clients came to me with the general concept and hired my services in order to develop the idea into reality.
Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
The product was created for the Teta Music and Cochavi-Klein companies and the use of it is entirely for them to decide.
What made you design this particular type of work?
When I was approached for this commission, I agreed although I had no experience in this type of work. I felt very connected to the idea and the vision from the start. I generally choose to work on projects and with clients I believe in, as it sparks the drive and devotion necessary for creating great designs. In this case, the design chose me, and not the other way around.
Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
Many names and images come to mind when trying to answer this question. Ultimately, I am inspired and influenced by many people and things every day, therefore I do not have an unequivocal answer
Who is the target customer for his design?
This product is mobile and intended for live performances, stage shows, festivals, weddings and other events. The target customers are producers and planners of all sorts who want to give their audience a new, unique experience.
What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
This design includes the combination of different elements to create an experience yet to be seen. The dynamic, interactive performance is what distinguishes it from other products, one performer’s ability to control and influence different senses at once helps achieve a unique and innovative show.
How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
The name of the product is “E-DRUM” – Electronic drum. The electronic drum-set is the main element of the design, controlling the lights and sounds of the show.
Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
I believe in combining different tools and mediums in any design, as each one directly affects the final product. The more I enrich my toolbox, the more independent I become, allowing me to learn and take my projects to the maximum. For this specific project, I used hand sketches, images, 3D models, both physical and digital, all through trial and error to develop the design.
What is the most unique aspect of your design?
In my opinion, the most unique aspect of this design is the innovation in connecting the experiences of the performer and his audience. The combination of motion, sound a light in one interactive, kinetic show leaves the spectator with a jaw-dropping sensory experience.
Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
This design includes a number of different aspects, requiring the collaboration between a variety of different professionals. As every part of the design influences the next, this project required full synchronization between industrial designers, lighting experts, stage directors, engineers, drummers, musicians and welders. With every step of the way, we learned to work together and achieve our goals.
What is the role of technology in this particular design?
Technology is a main factor in this project. The interactive connection between the different components of the installation is solely based on technology, creating a powerful performance. Using technology, we were able to translate the tapping of the drums into lights and sounds, controlling the notes, volume, intensity and motion of the components.
Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
Research is a central part of my design process. This project is based on studies of several different elements of the design, including electronic drum-sets and optimization of drumming in a 360 degree environment, hydraulics, metal cylinders and pistons for kinetic durability, and power suppliers and processors to withstand the electronic loads.
What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
The design process poses many challenges, and as designers, we have to be alert and attentive in order to find creative solutions. The main challenges for me in this project were: a) to turn the drummerperformer into an integral part of the installation, ensuring that, on stage, they are seen as one entity. B) Synchronizing the lighting, sounds and motion of the components in such a way that each one elevates the other without disturbing it. C) Designing the installation as a mobile product, while not compromising its dimensions (3M X 3M). These challenges required a strong orientation to details, as each millimeter is computed and every component is carefully selected.
How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
I regularly follow different design competitions and platforms from around the world. This way, I develop my sense of inspiration and motivation using the works of leading international designers. Following the works of these designers allows me to appreciate design and strive for greatness in my designs. I am a strong believer in my work processes and designs and did not hesitate to submit this design to the competition
What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
During this project, I learned a lot about myself, mainly about my passion and dedication for design. Throughout the process I realized the importance of following my curiosity and devoting myself to the design. I learned not to be afraid of the unknown or the unfamiliar, on the contrary, to take advantage of these situations and add more tools to my toolbox.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for this interview and for your interest in my design. The sharing of information, ideas and processes constitutes an integral part of the development of design worldwide. I hope that I was able to inspire your readers as I have been inspired from others.
