About Madame Butterfly Posters
Madame Butterfly is a series of opera posters. Each poster shows an iconic portrait of a singing woman as the central figure of the opera plot and a symbol of passion. The series covers operas such as Madame Butterfly, Tosca and Norma, and reflects the tragic and dependent role of women in their librettos. Every composition presents the final scene, the culmination of the story. The design draws on minimal shapes, expressive painting and the Memphis style, with open colors and strong contrast. The posters are printed in A1 size on carton paper.
Liudmila Shurygina's Madame Butterfly Posters represents a masterful synthesis of modernist graphic principles with cultural iconography, creating a visual identity for operatic performance that transcends mere promotional function to achieve the status of autonomous artistic statement. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how radical simplification can paradoxically amplify emotional resonance, reducing the human figure to essential geometric components while retaining profound expressive capacity. The designer's chromatic choices reveal careful consideration of both practical and symbolic dimensions: the saturated ultramarine establishes immediate visual arrest while evoking associations with twilight, longing, and emotional depth central to the operatic narrative. The vermillion mouth, though occupying minimal pictorial real estate, functions as the emotional fulcrum of the entire composition, its parted gesture suggesting the act of singing, the expression of profound feeling through voice. The butterfly motif emerges through multiple channels simultaneously: the bilateral hair arrangement, the wing-like spread of the kimono, and the implicit reference within the title itself, creating a layered visual metaphor for transformation and ephemerality. The diagonal typographic elements at the lower register introduce temporal dynamism, suggesting the announcement of a specific cultural moment while maintaining formal dialogue with the static figure above. This tension between stillness and movement, permanence and occasion, reflects the broader tensions within operatic form itself. The work participates in distinguished traditions of theatrical poster design while establishing its own distinctive visual vocabulary, one that honors its subject through aesthetic boldness rather than literal illustration. Viewers might contemplate how such extreme reduction paradoxically amplifies rather than diminishes emotional presence.

For example I am a big fan of the visual language of Robert Wilson. I think it could match in style in terms of campaign and other promotional material.
