Interview with Masahiko Sato

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I did not have related educational background in architecture so a started studying architecture by myself and from people that have proper knowledge.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
We are a small scale firm with 5 staff based in Fukuoka City Japan
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Ando Tadao, he is kind a figure that i admire for a very long time
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I always try to position myself as a future user of the end product.
What makes a design successful?
The satisfaction of its inhabitant an how it change society to better future
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
To give a proper example on how human should give consideration to the environment
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Design in the future will be absolutely more mesmerizing, more playful and reflect the lifestyle of modern civilization
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
When it comes to design precision comes first speed come second. Sometimes we are chased
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
I dont think there are negatives of being designer, everyone is designer of their life
What was your most important job experience?
Every experience has important value to my life, there are so many of them, and they are equally precious to me.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
We try to expand business abroad, always looking forward for a new challange from a new client in somewhere we have never been.

Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?
No formal architecture education, start self studying at some point.
What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?
Was impressed at how interesting architectural could be when working at work site.
What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?
Architectural design, not only houses, we expected to design any kind of building.
What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?
Design that able to increase the quality of its surrounding environment
What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?
A design that able to satisfy its user and people around it. Good design educate people and make society have a good standard of life.
What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?
To design not only inside japan, we want to provide our service to clients around the world.
What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?
I always have interest in any kind of design, regardless of what or who designed it.
What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?
I house (House of horizon) The harmonization of nature and design of the building.
How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?
Travel to many place around the world, witness and experience the plurality and endless posibilites of design.
How do you think designers should present their work?
By paying attention and show how the design will elaborate will the environments
What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?
Currently we are designing a shopping mall complex, several private houses design and collaborate with firm from europe in international architecture competition.
What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?
To create a design firm from japan that able to practice and compete globaly.
What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?
Endless creativity and improvement to create a much better architectural design that able to realize peoples dream and happiness.
How does design help create a better society?
By providing a solution and at the sametime stimulate more ideas.
What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?
Our collaboration with firm from italy on some architectural competition for school design. Its interesting to collaborate with other designer, it gave us chance to learn more about other culture and thinking approach.
What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?
Design wont become a product of certain individual anymore ,instead it will be a result of collaboration of many people and ideas.
Where do you think the design field is headed next?
Design that will pay more attention to relation of human and the sustainability of its environment.
How long does it take you to finalize a design project?
It different for each project depends on the scale and the requirements.
What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?
It helps create a desired condition that stimulate certain spatial experience
Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?
I trust all my staff in the office. They are my ideal design partner.
How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?
Its still to early to feel satisfied, i will keep working hard to produce better design and aim for more prestigious recognition.
Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?
I hope that more people could think not only for the sake of themselves or presenttime, we need to think more about the better future and next generation.
