About Beck Storer

Beck is the founder of The Cutaway - a creative studio that explores cultural storytelling in the public space to connect people to places and craft messages of meaning and value. Combining her love for design, technology and craft, her work challenges the curious and presents visual stories in the public space that are compelling and memorable. Her career spans over 20 years in the communication design industry, with her work being peer reviewed receiving numerous international awards. Her projects are vast, applying her sharp creativity through a wide range of disciplines including brand strategy, art direction and public art activations. A driver for challenging the way we see design and it’s role in our world, she shares everything she knows as a leader in industry led design education and has lectured and developed post graduate design courses in the Australian academic environment.

Interview with Beck Storer

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
From a very early age I can remember myself drawing. Drawing with crayons, pencils, chalk - anything I could get my hands on!
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
The Cutaway is a creative studio that upholds 3 basic values. We Make, Create and Play. We make beautiful tangible communication engagements through our love for design and craft. We create opportunities and inspiration for the next generation of designers with our involvement in design education. And we play! We love what we do and have fun doing it.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Research - Research is paramount for any successful design outcome.
What makes a design successful?
When that unexpected 1% comes to life. In all our projects we look for the exclusive extra 1% - the moment when you take the design that extra one step and it succeeds all expectations
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Right now, this very minute, creativity is most important commodity to invest in today's world. Creativity will form the new ideas, the innovative solutions that will disrupt our world for the better. We are starting to see this right now with the rise of entrepreneurial design....
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
An old vintage Australian Postal letterbox. A retro public phone from Indonesia. A large piece of typography found on the streets of Melbourne. A collection of vintage printers letter blocks made from wood. My children's drawings.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I graduated from the RMIT School of Design with a Masters in Design
How did you become a designer?
Beck is a dynamic creative leader with a passion for driving innovation and fostering creativity. With a diverse background in design, craft and design thinking, she brings a unique blend of strategic insight, leadership and hands-on experience to her community.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
Beck is a multidisciplinary designer renowned for creating dynamic visual stories in public spaces, each deeply rooted in the history and distinctive geography of its site. Her practice encompasses graphic design, projection art and animation, crafting bold and vibrant artworks that transform environments into engaging narratives. With a signature style that evokes curiosity and intrigue, Beck’s work invites the public to connect with the unique stories embedded in each location.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Throughout her career, Beck has held pivotal roles across both commercial and public art spheres, where she has led numerous initiatives that challenge and redefine the role of design in our world. From creating award-winning design projects to activating large-scale public artworks, her diverse work is a dynamic force for connection, curiosity, and social engagement.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
My parents are the foundation to my success and my biggest supporter - with them always encouraging me with a simple statement - "Just try your best" And I applied this with everything I do.
