Influenced by the Italian style of design, his works contains good ratio and elegant shape, and blend the eastern and western culture. Interview with Wen-Heng Chang

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
The first inspiration of my design journey was from my father, who is a product design. I major in Industrial design in college. I found my passion for design after I worked in the professional industry. Now I am a postgraduate student in Milan and I am learning more about Italian style of design.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Now it's only an personal studio, the aim is just only to better let more people know my personal works and design philosophy.
What is "design" for you?
Design is a part of life style. A good design is always beautiful and attractive for me. It can better improve people's daily life, bring the memory, impression, inspiration and awareness to people. Make a even stronger connection with their own culture.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I like to challenge different design fields, such as furniture, light, transportation and wellness for the elders. After I come to Milan, now I try to use different design thinking and strategy, and cooperate with different people to design products.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
I think my answer will be the PORSCHE 911 type 996. I think it may be an unexpected answer. I must say that Pinky Lai, who was the former chief design of PORSCHE is one of the best designer in my mind. His works can welly represent the combination of beauty and function.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
It was an rj-45 plug wall outlet, which can also see as the internet jack. I helped the company to totally improve an failure project. I modified the structure of production molds and tools to let this product become a workable one and released it to the market.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
It's an hard question. I can say that any latest technology and material can be an ingredient for me, such as VR and driverless car.
When do you feel the most creative?
It depends. Normally I will have creative thinking when I was along or after a free chatting with friends.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
It depends. Recently is more about the global issue and the COVID-19.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I like to let myself totally emerge into the environment of design and enjoy it.
What makes a design successful?
Beautiful and affordable. A good design need to let user have strong connection with it depends on their own background and culture.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
To use design to solving these problems in an more effective way and need to be more environmental friendly.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Actually my last exhibition was date back to 2013. I had my thesis project show with the YODEX Exhibition in Taipei. I think I will have my next exhibition this year with my latest A Design Award work.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Always see other people's design and always let my daily life become a part of my inspiration.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I was born in Taiwan. Now I live in Milan. Different culture do really give a lot of different inspiration about design.
How do you work with companies?
Before I came to Milan, I work as a product engineer for four years. I used to support my company in different kind of fields. I need to be a communicator and connection between the clients and the factories, to improve the design concept and make into mass production process. On the other hand, I also had experience to start from the beginning of research&design process to the launching of marketing. I can say I learned a lot about how to be a team member in a company.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
First, I was quite lucky to join a relatively smaller company, which I could had a lot of opportunities to experience different kind of work. I met a good mentor who was my product manager. He fully trust my ability. In conclusion, I think the company need to spend time and provide enough resources to let a junior designer learn and grow. On the other hand, a good designer is who can think outside the box and solve the problem.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Normally, I start from study and take reference of other designers' works. And it's very important to get inspiration from different design aspect, such as architecture , vehicle and fine arts. Then how to use my imagination to combine the resources I have and use the right tool to create my design is very important. If possible, have good discussion and opinion exchange with your team members is also very important. Then make the the prototype to test the function is important as well.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
My Alessi Moka pot, my chair, my toilet, my lamp and my balcony.
Can you describe a day in your life?
Now I am a student. Normally I take about 15 minutes to manage myself. Then I have a simple breakfast, and a cup of coffee is very important. I like to walk to school, it takes me about 15 to 20 minutes. Normally I only have 3 hours of lecture per day. I will spend some time to discuss with my teammates for our workshop project in the school. Then I like to visit the supermarket to so some purchasing before I go home. Then I make myself the dinner. After I came to Milan, I learn how to boxing, so sometimes I will go boxing with my friends in the evening.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
For myself, I am still learning how to be a good and qualified designer. I just want to say that based on my personal experience, don't limit yourself in specific field, try to expend your knowledge in different profession. On the other hand, be a good member in a team and try to exchange your opinion with others is extremely important, it can make you a good leader in the future.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
I am very appreciate to become a designer. You can have a opportunity to crate some with your mind is very enjoyable. However, sometimes others will take your effort as granted, they don't realize how much time you spend on it.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
A good design need to be reasonable, affordable, solving the problem and beutiful.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
I used to use the Solidworks the most due to I was a product engineer. Now I still use it as my main tool of modeling. For rendering, I use the Keyshot. I also use the Photoshop and Illustrator for the graphic. On the other hand, I use the Sketchbook Pro for digital sketching, and also I like the free hand sketching. Recently I try to learn some Rhino. I own some books about car, fine art, product and design skill. They always give me some inspiration at different moment.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
It depends, I need to say that I am not a good time controller, and I still learning how to use my time more efficiency. It's really a big task for me.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It really depends on how much teammate and resources you have. Sometime you have the lead time pressure to finish a project, but have the limit of time is very important, it can push you to design good objects.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
Who is the user? Whats the problem? Whats the technology? How much is the budget?
What was your most important job experience?
I worked in a small company in Taiwan in the structure cabling field. I learned a lot about many thing.From professional skills, solutions for clients, communication with factories to get along and hang out with my colleagues.
Who are some of your clients?
It very depends on who you work with. I can be an individual or even a big company.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I hope I can use my personal experience of education and culture background to design more product. I hope can can more clearly know my passion of design and keep improve it.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Recently, my friends and I is planning to brand our own street fashion product. We are now start fro our logo and we are still in the research progress about our product position.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
After I got my Bachelor's degree of Industrial Design, I joined the Communication Management Formulae Ltd. in Taipei. This was a structure cabling company which belong to MMC France and TKH Group Netherlands. As a product engineer, I learned a lot of practical design skills and knowledge. Now I move to Milan to study for my master degree in Domus Academy and learn the Italian style of design.
How did you become a designer?
In the beginning, I was influenced a lot by my father due to he is also a product designer. I saw how he works and he also give me a little bit of talent about how to appreciate the art and beauty. However, I made sure that my destiny was design when I got my first job. I knew that my ability was needed by my clients. Now I am in Italy to study again, and I still find my passion for design and I am keep learning to be a better designer.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
In the beginning as a designer, I just use my talent and skill to create design, I was more like the kids playing toys and I treated design as a hobby which I do it for fun and self-satisfying. Now I learn much more about how to think as a user, and how to use the resources I have, such my teammates and what kind of tool and skill I have. I try to integrate every thing I have to make a new design.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I enjoy the process to create a new object. However, sometimes I feel upset due to I don't have enough skill and knowledge to create a perfect result which I already have in my mind. Anyway, design is like a game for me, and every objects I create are like my own child.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I used to be a product engineer, and I had more experience about mechanical design, but I still have the degree about Industrial Design. After I start to continue in Milan, I learn more about the history or design, also, I already know a lot of new designers, brands and products. And through the daily life and traveling, it's a totally different experience and a culture shocking, which also give me a lot of inspiration.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Before I study abroad, I already had the experience related design and it was very practical and useful. Now I have the opportunity to study again, I try to figure out more about my passion of design. I hope I can be a successful designer not only in my country, and even have the opportunity to own my own studio in the future. And build my personal reputation to let more people know me.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
I also just in the very beginning of my own design journey. I just want to say is that try to learn as much as you can, and don't hesitate to cooperate with anyone, and the most important thing is fin your passion.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Not really, I mean now I still can't call myself a successful designer. Find your passion, and you will successful.
What is your day to day look like?
Now as I become a student again, I try to experience more from my daily life in school. Also, I go to the gym with my friends in Italy, and sometimes also traveling in different countries in Europe, I just want to say that how to get the inspiration from daily life is very important.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I follow the latest trend of design from the social media and internet resources, such as online magazine and websites. I think it's very important to know the new trend of design, which can let you have more creative idea when creating a new object.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
From the research stage, designers need to think carefully and consider the designer requirements from users. A good design can help the users solve the problems in a much appropriate and efficient way, and both bring the value to the brand, company and society.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Through the design process, you need set the checking point. For example, before the production molds or others tools been made, you need make sure the prototype test is workable, and before the product being launched to the market, you need make sure the there is no problem for the quality control. Even after the sale, you also need to prepare for the engineering design change to prevent any problems from the users.
What is your biggest design work?
As I just received the A Design Award, the rollator-wheelchair is one of my best design so far. I first started to develop this concept from college, and my partner spent one year to finish this project.Now as I have more knowledge and time, I improve it again. I can say there is still a long way to go.
Who is your favourite designer?
Pinky Lai, absolutely who is my favorite designer. He was the former design chief of PORSCHE. His legacy and story inspired me a lot. If I have the chance, I hope I can have a talk face to face with him, I will asked him for some advice. Others like Phillip Starck, Richard Sapper and Zaha Hadid also give me a lotof inspiration.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I was born in Taiwan, this is a part which I am very proud of. The place where I grew up, the food, culture and my family. All these things are inspiration to me. Also, as now I moved to Milan, the Italian culture is a new part for me. Through the daily lifestyle, I am learning new things which can be the motivation of my design.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
Work with me may not that hard, I mean now I have more experience about how to cooperate with others, and even lead a team. I like people have different personality and culture background, all these elements can create more more amazing results of design.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
I hope I can design more useful thing to the earth, to the elders and anyone need it.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
Get the A Design Award do really benefit and mean a lot to me, not only just for my career. It also increase my confidence to let me know that I want to be a better designer.

I won't say I am a very good or qualified designer. I think this answer need to be give or judged by others. However, I can say that always try to find your patent and what you love to do, no matter what kind of work your are involved in.

I think a good designer is to provide good idea and beautiful products to make market benefits for companies or their clients. A great designer is even bring the inspiration and awareness to the society and others, and always think beyond the current times.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
I like to get inspiration from successful examples. I hope I can create a useful thing to whom need it. So a good design is about the story behind it, and what the problem it solved or the value it brings to people.

A good design can help people live in a better life quality, and have stronger connection with others. Invest good design shows the respect and support to the designers, which can motivate them to create more good products.

I want to design for the elders, especially my grandmother. I have strong relationship with her. I hope I can design something for her.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I always want to design a vehicle or something is purely related to the beauty. A sculpture, and this think can be a forever classic example for next generation.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
I don't know I can call my route of design is successful or now, it just a beginning. I am still learning, and for sure that I hope some day I can be proud of myself that my creation bring the value to others.

The porsche 996, a true master piece of car in my mind, and the welly represent the spirit of bauhaus. The other one is my MOKA pot, which is designed by Richard Sapper, and now I use it every. So I think they brings me the happiness to my life.

So far I think the product which win the latest A Design Award is one of my best design. It do really can provide the support to the elders and make a positive value to the society. And it win the prize! Which encourage my design route a lot.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I like to explore and get the inspiration from other designers' works. And try to find the good examples for reference from different aspects and latest technology.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I am not sure.But I used to play a little bit music. I was a lead guitarist in a small band, it's just for fun, but it may be a job. Who knows?
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
It's very simple for me. I do the design because I love beautiful things. I enjoy the process to create something.
