About Off the Eaten Path Packaging

Off the Eaten Path is a packaging design for a range of premium plant based snacks. The snacks combine real vegetables such as chickpeas, black beans and peas in unexpected blends. The packaging gives the brand a united visual identity across every application. The design aims to help the brand stand out within the crowded better for you snack category. A small group of consumers took part in the development process and gave feedback at each stage. Consumer input guided the design decisions and supported a consistent brand experience.

PepsiCo Design and Innovation's Off the Eaten Path Packaging represents a distinguished achievement in contemporary food packaging design, embodying the evolving consumer desire for transparency, authenticity, and visual honesty in grocery presentations. The design system demonstrates a masterful understanding of shelf presence dynamics, employing a chromatic differentiation strategy that allows individual variants to maintain distinct identities while cohering as an unmistakable product family through consistent typographic treatment, logo placement, and compositional philosophy. The floating ingredient photography scattered across each package surface suggests a design approach that prioritizes ingredient storytelling, allowing consumers to visually encounter the actual components of their snacks in appetizing, almost dance-like arrangements that celebrate botanical diversity and culinary craft. The circular brand medallion positioned prominently in the upper register employs a sophisticated typographic hierarchy, where the playful crossing element between words creates memorable brand recognition while the "Snacks for the Curious" tagline establishes a clear positioning toward adventurous, health-conscious consumers seeking alternatives to conventional snack offerings. The color selections demonstrate thoughtful psychological calibration, with the spring green variants communicating vegetal freshness and vitality, the golden yellow suggesting Mediterranean warmth and olive oil richness, and the aubergine purple conveying both indulgence and the presence of distinctive ingredients like purple sweet potatoes. This packaging system appears to draw upon contemporary design movements that favor authenticity over artifice, transparency over mystification, and approachable sophistication over intimidating exclusivity. The viewer might consider how such design choices reflect broader cultural shifts toward mindful consumption and ingredient awareness, inviting contemplation of the evolving relationship between visual communication and consumer trust in food contexts.
