About Inside Muses Book
Inside Muses is a book created for K11 Musea, a retail and dining space in Hong Kong that promotes contemporary art and design. The publication features works from the four muses of the retail concept: Architecture, Furniture, Nature and Art. Storytelling, illustration and photography present each theme, and the unconventional format invites readers to explore new perspectives. Circle graphics on the cover represent the spheres of the four muses. The regular edition is hand sewn, while the hardcover edition is encased in a clear acrylic box similar to a display vitrine.
Inside Muses Book by Toby Ng Design exemplifies the contemporary renaissance in publication design where the physical codex transcends its function as mere information vessel to become a sculptural object worthy of contemplation and collection. This work participates in a distinguished lineage of artist books and luxury editions that treat the printed volume as a total design environment, wherein every material choice, surface treatment, and structural decision contributes to a unified aesthetic experience. The designer demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to material semiotics, selecting a warm cream stock that suggests archival permanence and tactile refinement, while the three golden circular forms introduce a visual rhythm that may evoke celestial bodies, moments of illumination, or the classical tradition of gilt ornamentation that has adorned precious manuscripts for centuries. The transparent acrylic slipcase functions simultaneously as protective architecture and display vitrine, allowing the object to be appreciated as sculpture while safeguarding its surfaces from environmental damage. Technical accomplishment manifests in the precise registration of the embossed typography, which achieves legibility through dimensional shadow rather than chromatic contrast, demonstrating confidence in subtle gesture over emphatic statement. The compositional decision to present the volume at a dynamic angle against absolute darkness creates a sense of the object floating within an infinite void, transforming product documentation into contemplative still life. The work invites consideration of how contemporary designers navigate the tension between digital dematerialization and the enduring human desire for physical objects that reward sustained attention and tactile engagement. One might contemplate how the circular golden forms establish visual dialogue with the rectangular format, their organic geometry softening the architectural precision of the overall composition while suggesting windows into illuminated content within.
