About Cosmetea Pop Up Shop

Cosmetea Pop Up is a retail and exhibition shop in Shanghai, China. The 9 square meter space occupies a former steamed bun restaurant on Yuyuan Road, a street with more than 100 years of history. The design combines tea with cosmetics. A dramatic opening on the facade, inspired by the tea pitcher form of the brand logo, extends into a narrow circular tunnel clad in mirrored stainless steel and lit by LED strips. Shelves are inserted into bespoke slots based on mortise and tenon joints. A red wall cabinet provides display and storage.

Emerging from the intersection of experiential retail design and immersive installation practice, this architectural intervention exemplifies the contemporary impulse to transform commercial encounters into memorable spatial experiences through bold formal gestures and sophisticated light orchestration. The work positions itself within a lineage of threshold architecture that treats the entrance not merely as functional aperture but as transformative portal, a liminal zone where the mundane street transitions into something approaching the extraordinary. The designers demonstrate remarkable restraint in their material palette, employing industrial steel cladding in muted charcoal tones that simultaneously assert contemporary minimalist sensibilities while allowing the illuminated circular entrance to command complete visual attention. The technical achievement lies in the precise calibration between the cool white LED ring's stark geometric purity and the warm rose-tinted interior that beckons with an almost biological warmth, suggesting perhaps the flush of skin or the interior of a seashell, associations that resonate meaningfully with the cosmetic enterprise housed within. The concentric ribbed structure visible through the portal creates a rhythmic spatial progression that rewards approach and anticipation, each successive curve marking a deeper penetration into the experiential realm. The compositional logic positions this intervention as a kind of urban punctuation, a full stop or perhaps an exclamation point interrupting the ordinary streetscape syntax with something demanding contemplation. One might observe how the vertical light strip descending from the ring's crown to the ground plane functions almost as an axis mundi connecting celestial geometry to earthly foundation, while the perfect circle has carried associations of wholeness, completion, and cyclical renewal across countless cultural traditions. The work invites viewers to consider how commercial architecture might transcend transactional function to offer genuine spatial poetry, transforming the simple act of entering a shop into a passage through light toward warmth, beauty, and transformation.

Production Technology
The entire tunnel is clad in mirrored stainless steel and highlighted by LED strip lights. Shelves are orderly inserted into bespoke slots by drawing on the concept of mortise and tenon joints. The wall cabinet that serves display and storage functions is finished with red paint, which echoes the brand's visual identity. The narrow circular tunnel is like a "wormhole" across time and space, enabling people to temporarily escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Project Duration
Location: Shanghai, China
Completion time: the end of 2019
Operation Flow
The designers drew inspiration from the brand's logo, which outlines a tea pitcher. Based on the brand logo's pendulum-like form and symbolic meaning, the design team carved out a dramatic opening on the facade, and extended it to the 9m2 tunnel space, thereby creating an infinite realm within the limited site area.
Research
The project sits on Yuyuan Road, which has a history of more than 100 years and carries the cultural context of Shanghai. The brand selected a former small steamed bun restaurant at a corner of Yuyan Road, and asked Nax Architects to convert it into a pop-up for retailing and exhibition purposes, hoping to create a new venue that caters to the lifestyles of contemporary urban people and convey the genes and values of the brand.
Inspiration
Tea has long served as a carrier. It's good for health and also acts as a medium of socializing -such dual attributes have been given diverse interpretations in the new era, in order to fit into the lifestyles of modern urbanites.
COSMETEA is a tea cosmetics brand, which breaks the conventional definition of beauty and innovatively combines tea materials with its "Tea Beauty Science", to convey modern fashion aesthetics derived from Oriental naturalism.
