About Linkong Biomedical Park Multifunctional Offices

Linkong Biomedical Park is a research and production complex for the life science and biotechnology industry in Zhengzhou, China. The park includes an incubation and experiment center, pilot production buildings, large production plants, an exhibition center, a conference and catering center and living facilities. A central landscape belt divides the site into two zones and improves the efficiency of use. The plan is inspired by the double helix of DNA. Floor heights, column spans, structural loads and waste water treatment follow the technical needs of biomedical work.

Wsp Architects's Linkong Biomedical Park Multifunctional Offices exemplifies a sophisticated engagement with organic architectural form-making that has characterized some of the most innovative institutional design of the early twenty-first century, participating in broader conversations about how buildings might transcend their static nature to become dynamic participants in landscape systems rather than isolated objects upon neutral ground, the serpentine configuration of interconnected volumes creates what might be understood as an architectural embrace, with the building's arms reaching around to define protected interior courtyards while simultaneously opening outward to engage the surrounding parkland, this dual orientation speaks to the complex programmatic requirements of contemporary biomedical research environments which must balance the need for controlled interior conditions with recognition that human creativity and wellbeing flourish when connected to natural systems, the technical achievement evident in the seamless integration of extensive green roof systems demonstrates mastery of contemporary sustainable building technologies, with the living surfaces appearing to flow continuously from grade-level lawns up and over the building volumes in an unbroken topographic gesture, the glass curtain wall systems punctuating the white-banded horizontal planes provide generous natural illumination to interior spaces while the carefully articulated reveals and mullion patterns create subtle rhythmic variations across the facades, compositionally the work achieves remarkable balance between the centripetal forces drawing attention inward toward the courtyard heart and centrifugal energies extending outward into landscape, the chromatic restraint of the architectural palette allows the verdant greens to assume visual primacy establishing the building as fundamentally a garden structure, viewers might contemplate how this work reimagines the relationship between architecture and ecology, proposing that buildings need not merely minimize environmental impact but might actively contribute to the flourishing of living systems

Production Technology
The project needs to solve the technical problems of biomedical research and production technology, such as the specific floor height, column span, structural load, special air conditioning equipment location, waste water treatment and safe discharge, cargo transportation streamline organization, and proper preservation of hazardous chemicals. All these special projects are planned and designed in strict accordance with relevant national and industrial specifications and the actual needs of enterprises.
Design Challenge
Architects have to face the challenge of combining the principles of planning and design with the demand of scientific research and production technology for space carrier in biomedical industry. From the macro planning concept to the construction of the space scene, and then to the realization of the construction details, this paper puts forward a complete creative solution, which fully presents the distinctive characteristics of biomedicine, a high-tech field from practical to aesthetic.
Project Duration
The project started in March 2017 in Zhengzhou, Henan, China and finished in September 2020 in Zhengzhou, Henan, China
Research
The exhibition center formed by the free ellipse is located in the center of the axis, forming the main square of the park with the International Conference Center and incubation center in the south, and forming a sharp contrast with the modular pilot products in the north, which are square and round, free and rigorous. The sense of hierarchy and quality of the park shows the overall image of the park for the visitors at the first time. It is a model area ahead of the park.
Inspiration
The plan is inspired from "source of life" double-helix DNA, which is also the totem mark of the biomedical industry. The Exhibition Center manifests such unique features of the biomedical industry characterized by sense of science and technology, insight into the future.Based on the axis of life, the park creates a central landscape belt of 200000 square meters.
