About Benjamin Moore Experience Center

Benjamin Moore is a paint showroom and experience space in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, China. The interior covers 100 square meters and combines products with art. The design moves away from conventional showroom display modes and reshapes the space for experience, purchase and communication. Paint is applied to props and objects rather than only to walls. Common materials such as wood, stone, leather, steel tube and acrylic are left in a semi-processed state, which shows the contrast between material textures and paint colors.

Unique Properties
The designer adopted an experimental approach to conceive the space by capturing random occurrences and sudden flash of ideas. The design was taken as a process of experiment and discovery.
The design broke the conventional display modes of showrooms, but tried to combine products and art in an experimental way and reshape the overall spatial scenes for experience, purchasing and communication, thereby turning the 100sqm space into a place with attitudes and full of "impromptu" surprises.

Production Technology
The light bulb that provided lighting for painting process on the site, the masking tape tore off from the painted ceramic tiles, and the structural parts cut from the curved wall for length control, harmonize with each other in this space.
Common materials such as wood, stone, leather, steel tube and acrylic are presented in a touchable manner in combination with paint. Their semi-processed state shows the dramatic fusion and contrast of material textures and paint colors.
Design Challenge
Uncertainty posed the greatest challenge to the design. As we combined distinct materials and paint, we had no idea if each combination would achieve an excellent result. The design needs not only to be practical in application, but also to create a certain aesthetic relationship. When we looked for props, we were not limited to a particular form, did not predict the final result, and did not know whether they fit into the aesthetic concept either.

Operation Flow
Located in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, China, the client Benjamin Moore commissioned NDB DESIGN STUDIO to conceive a showroom and experiential space. The design team broke the conventional display modes of showrooms, but tried to combine products and art in an experimental way and reshape the overall spatial scenes for experience, purchasing and communication, thereby turning the 100sqm space into a place with attitudes and full of "impromptu" surprises.
Research
Though the paint showroom is small, it showcases the application of paint and its impact on life. When entrusted with the project, we felt excited, not because of the influence of brand Benjamin Moore, but about how to present paint in an interesting way, so as to change people's perception of paint.
This space is shaped by both design and life. The overall design shakes off presets, but instead adopts an experimental approach to embrace uncertainties and return to the simplicity of life.
Inspiration
American paint brand Benjamin Moore commissioned NDB DESIGN STUDIO to conceive a showroom and experiential space in Jinhua, China, hoping to convey its brand values and image.
The designers doubted why paint could only be attached to walls but not for making props? This became the starting point of the design. The design team hoped to shake off the conventional practice and process, and to fully showcase the excellent performance of the brand's paint products.
