About Carefree Restaurant
Carefree is a restaurant interior designed for traditional Sichuan cuisine in Chengdu, China. The space covers 1480 square meters and is divided into a refreshment area, a wine area and private rooms. Chinese carved fencing and dim lighting give the refreshment area a secluded feeling. The private rooms are kept plain so that attention stays on the food. A sculpture at the center of the moon gate combines the brand name with ink painting. A wall screen shows plants changing through the four seasons, and bamboo, marble and red brick are used throughout.
Carefree Restaurant by Xiaobing Yao exemplifies the intersection of contemporary interior design with experiential spatial narrative, positioning itself within the lineage of immersive hospitality environments that transcend mere functional programming to become vehicles for contemplative experience. The installation demonstrates sophisticated understanding of phenomenological spatial theory, employing a monumental cylindrical form as both sculptural presence and threshold device that transforms passage through the restaurant into ritualized procession. The designer's chromatic strategy reveals particular sensitivity to the psychological resonance of color, pairing the luminous aquamarine interior of the cylindrical portal with the warm atmospheric tones of the forest backdrop to create a dialogue between the manufactured sublime and natural memory. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless integration of architectural lighting with environmental imagery, where the backlit forest scrim dissolves the boundary between interior shelter and exterior landscape, evoking traditions of borrowed scenery from classical garden design translated into contemporary idiom. The deliberate inclusion of a figure in motion, captured with temporal blur, transforms documentary architectural photography into meditation on human inhabitation of designed space, suggesting that the true subject extends beyond built form to encompass the experiential choreography of bodies moving through carefully orchestrated spatial sequences. The work participates in contemporary discourse surrounding biophilic design and the integration of natural imagery into urban interiors while simultaneously engaging with minimalist sculptural traditions that privilege pure geometric form. One might consider how the circular aperture functions as both practical passage and symbolic threshold, inviting contemplation of the boundaries between artificial and natural, interior and exterior, stillness and movement that define contemporary spatial experience.

- This is a high-end restaurant specializing in traditional Sichuan cuisine, located at No.177 Tianfu Avenue, Guixi Street, Wuhou District, Chengdu, Sichuan. Different from traditional restaurants' pursuit of swarmingwithvisitors, Tianqu Restaurant integrates itself into the urban landscape in the way like a man goes into noisy crowd to drown his own clamour of silence.

- The main materials in this project are gold brick, marble, copper like stainless steel, glass brick, art coating, wire glass, wood burning, tile, zigzag red brick and bamboo device.
- Design Challenge
- The designer installed a 360 degrees LED screen on the wall where the vegetation can show the change of the four seasons over time, from lush green to fully dyed autumn color, echoing with the business philosophy of Natural Appeal Restaurant that taking seasonal materials to cook seasonal health food, and using artificial objects to vividly express the ancient wisdom of getting along with nature.
- Project Duration
- The project started in August 2020 in Chengdu and finished in May 2021 in Chengdu.
- Operation Flow
- The sculpture in the center of the moon gate is the finishing touch of the whole space. The designer uses deconstruction techniques to combine the radical strokes of the word "Tianqu" with the ink painting to build a brand logo with both style and beauty. As the brand texts and ink interwoven into the restaurant, the classic style of the whole space is also revealed.
- Research
- When entering the art corridor people will find a picture of sparse bamboo and moonlight shadow. The designer takes bamboo as raw material, and makes the hanging decoration of bright red geometry with artistic atmosphere. The modelling reflection of extremely rich visual tension is on the mirror surface wall, so that the light has the poetic charm.
- Inspiration
- Master Lin Yutang once explained the beauty of architecture as follows: "We are indulged ourselves in it, but we have no idea where nature ends and art begins." Nature and artificiality does not mean disorder or deliberately. In this connection, natural custom should be built into the overall planning of advanced design. Drawing inspiration from seasonal scenery, the YDS Design Office endows it into Carefree, allowing guests enjoy themselves and feel the power of nature.
