About Dwelling S Residential
Dwelling S is a residential interior design created by joining two apartment units, with a total area of 578.5 square meters. The kitchen island dining table and the adjoining open area form the social center of the home. The table is made of stone and wood and is suspended without corner legs, which makes it safer for children. A transparent wine cellar with a stone-like exterior displays the wine collection. Large slab tiles, marble-textured stone tiles and dark Venetian paint create a modern atmosphere. Private and social areas are separated for comfort and privacy.
Qu Space Design's Dwelling S Residential achieves a synthesis of preservation infrastructure and ceremonial presentation, transforming the utilitarian requirements of wine storage into an environment of contemplative reverence that honors both the practical demands of optimal aging conditions and the cultural significance of wine within traditions of hospitality and domestic refinement, situating the design within contemporary residential luxury paradigms that increasingly dedicate specialized spaces to collection display, whether for wine, art, rare books, or other objects of connoisseurship, reflecting broader cultural movements valuing curation, provenance, and the material culture of refined living, the compositional intelligence evident throughout demonstrates sophisticated understanding of spatial hierarchy and visual organization, establishing clear zones of primary display, secondary storage, and tertiary accent through calibrated distribution of illumination, material character, and geometric emphasis, the dominant illuminated wall-mounted racking system functions as the signature element, its backlit grid transforming individual bottles into a luminous field reminiscent of reliquary display or museum vitrine presentation, suggesting affinities with ecclesiastical architecture where precious objects receive focused illumination within protective enclosures, or with retail luxury environments where merchandise transcends commercial transaction to become aspirational artifact, the technical execution reveals accomplished integration of lighting design with architectural form, where concealed sources produce the desired atmospheric effect without visible fixture intrusion, maintaining spatial purity and directing attention exclusively toward the displayed bottles rather than the infrastructure enabling their presentation, the material palette demonstrates admirable restraint, limiting chromatic and textural variety to generate maximum impact from minimal means, the matte black ceiling plane provides neutral backdrop that recedes visually while its linear ribbed texture introduces rhythmic articulation preventing monotonous flatness, the warm timber mullions contribute biophilic material character and thermal chromatic warmth that humanizes the otherwise cool precision of the orthogonal geometry, while the grey stone island introduces tactile solidity and visual grounding, its horizontal mass anchoring the composition and providing functional surface for bottle presentation, decanting ritual, or tasting ceremony, the design appears to explore the intersection between functional infrastructure and aesthetic experience, questioning how spaces dedicated to preservation and storage might transcend utilitarian efficiency to become environments for contemplation, appreciation, and ritualized engagement with collected objects, the careful calibration of illumination levels suggests understanding that wine requires protection from light exposure for preservation yet benefits from strategic illumination for selection and appreciation, resolving this tension through zones of ambient darkness punctuated by focused display lighting that activates only during human presence and engagement, the spatial experience suggested by the composition invites intimate engagement at domestic scale, perhaps accommodating two to four individuals comfortably for shared tasting or collaborative selection, yet maintaining sufficient visual breadth and volumetric containment to feel substantial rather than cramped, the horizontal extension of the stone island and the vertical emphasis of the display wall create satisfying proportional relationships that establish human scale reference while suggesting aspirational abundance through the visible quantity of bottles arrayed in organized rows, the design's success resides substantially in its ability to balance opposing demands of accessibility and preservation, display and protection, abundance and selectivity, creating an environment that celebrates wine as both quotidian domestic pleasure and rarified cultural artifact worthy of reverent stewardship, one might contemplate how such dedicated spaces for collection storage and display reflect evolving domestic spatial programs that increasingly accommodate specialized functions previously relegated to commercial or institutional settings, bringing museum-quality environmental control and presentation strategies into private residential contexts, and consider what this domestication of curatorial practice suggests about contemporary relationships between ownership, stewardship, knowledge accumulation, and the construction of personal identity through material possessions thoughtfully acquired, preserved, and shared within rituals of hospitality and celebration that connect individuals across temporal, geographic, and cultural boundaries through appreciation of craft, terroir, and the patient transformation of agricultural harvest into aged complexity.

- Unique Properties
- The kitchen island dining table and the adjacent open area are the social centerpieces. To meet the owner's dual needs for aesthetics and functionality, the designer used a suspended table to create a solid table made of a combination of stone and wood. Without the square chair legs, the table is aesthetically pleasing, modern, and safe for children. The designer planned a fully transparent wine cellar with a stone-like exterior, aiming to properly display the wine collection while maintaining privacy. The special paint and large tiles give an intense look and quality, which is both modern and understated luxury.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The site has a total area of 578.5 square meters and is a connection of two living units. The layout is four rooms, a living room, a dining room, and an audio-visual area. There is also a gymnasium, a reading room, and a children's playroom. Considering the circulation, the designer separated private and social areas to achieve a balance of functionality and privacy.

- Production Technology
- Materials used on a large scale include large slab tiles, Venetian paint, and marble-textured stone tiles. The color scheme is dark. The black Venetian special paint shapes a metallic, shimmering pattern. The details have a pearly veil effect, adding a modern and luxurious touch, and reinforcing the atmosphere of sophistication and luxury. The change of light between day and night separates the different areas through the contrast of materials and colors. In particular, the designer used darker colors in private areas such as the wine cellar and the audio-visual room.
- Design Challenge
- There were two challenges: the owner's extensive storage needs and the location of the bathtub. The homeowner needs a lot of storage space, especially for clothing and other personal items. The designer must figure out a solution that would be open and aesthetically pleasing within the limited space. In addition, the owner wants the bathtubs in each bathroom to face the windows, so the designer reconfigured the plumbing and layout.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in August 2023 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- Positive feedback from the occupants centered on several aspects, i.e. enhanced comfort and tranquility. Owners pointed out that the new home is quieter and more comfortable than the previous one due to the openness of the space and the structural enhancements to improve sleep quality. Functional zoning has been optimized. The home allows for the separation of social and private activities and allows for the activities of children and adults to be carried out without interfering with each other. Flexibility in the use of space.
- Research
- The openness and functionality of the project satisfy the owner's pursuit of a high-quality life. The centerpiece of the dining room, with its kitchen island and adjoining open area, is the core of social interaction, ideal for gatherings of family and friends and showcasing the perfect combination of utility and aesthetics. The privacy of the wine cellar, with its stone exterior, showcases wines and serves as the highlight of the space, revealing the owner's personalized taste and pursuit of a high quality of life.
- Inspiration
- The site is a merger of two residential units. The owner, a frequent traveler, wants a home that combines the comfort of a hotel with the warmth of a home. The designer came up with a modern and comfortable design solution that emphasizes a practical yet eye-catching wine cellar to showcase the wine collection. The project aims to satisfy the owner's desire for a high quality of life, while at the same time expressing his taste. A home is more than a residence, it is also a space to display one's personality and collection.
