About Port Holiday Home

Port is a holiday home of 201.6 square meters in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with a view over the harbour. The original two-bedroom layout was changed into three bedrooms so that family and friends can stay comfortably. A wardrobe serves as the wall between two bedrooms, which saves space, adds storage and reduces sound transmission. The living area offers three gathering places: a sofa zone, a dining table and a bar placed at opposite ends. A black tone, a grille ceiling and a black mirror under the beam reduce the visual weight of the low beams, while curved shapes soften the interior.

Port Holiday Home by Chu Chieh Liang exemplifies the contemporary evolution of residential interior design where material authenticity and spatial drama converge to create environments of profound sensory engagement. This work emerges from a design philosophy that privileges the inherent character of natural materials while orchestrating their relationships through careful chromatic restraint and luminous modulation. The composition demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how rough and polished surfaces, warm and cool temperatures, light and shadow can dialogue across a unified spatial field. The designer seems to engage with traditions of material honesty traceable through modernist precedents while embracing a contemporary sensibility for theatrical effect and atmospheric depth. The monumental stone wall serves as the spiritual anchor of the living zone, its irregular blocks suggesting geological time and earthen permanence against the precision-crafted elements surrounding it. The sculptural pendant fixture above the kitchen island introduces organic fluidity into an otherwise rectilinear vocabulary, its wave-form silhouette perhaps evoking maritime associations befitting a holiday retreat. Chromatic choices reveal measured deliberation: the cognac leather introduces warmth against cool grey dominance, while the steel-blue chair and burgundy table provide subtle punctuation without disrupting overall harmony. The reflective marble floor amplifies spatial depth and light distribution, creating a sense of liquid continuity throughout. This interior invites contemplation of how contemporary design might honor material truth while crafting atmospheres of refined retreat, asking viewers to consider what constitutes authentic luxury in spaces designed for respite and renewal.

Production Technology
The owners have considered the structural problems such as low beam lines and large beams and columns. Therefore, the practice of not capping the roof is adopted, and the top surface is decorated with grille and flat nail ceiling, which avoids further compression of the height of the house while beautifying. Moreover, it starts from the color, to use the black color with retraction function, and then installs a black mirror at the bottom of the beam.
Design Challenge
The living room is designed with black tone and iron elements. Although it achieves the effect of hiding the roof beam and focusing the sight on the window scenery and furniture, it also creates a cool texture virtually. In order to avoid the space atmosphere is too hard and cold, the arc shape is appropriately added in the decoration, so as to play the role of softening the overall environment and adding a soft atmosphere.
Project Duration
The project took 7 months and was finished in May 2024 in Kaohsiung.
Operation Flow
In addition to being a holiday home, there is also the need to entertain relatives and friends. Therefore, by observing the habits of male and female owners, it is found that they prefer to communicate with their friends in different places. The dining table and the bar are specially placed at both ends to create a living area layout of three reception spaces, including the sofa zone. The male host is used to gathering with relatives and friends in the dining place, while the hostess, who likes to make tea and cook light food to entertain friends, uses the bar as the main gathering place.
Research
To meet the accommodation needs of a family of four members, one bedroom is divided into two bedrooms to achieve the purpose of increasing a bedroom. However, the engineering method of using bricks to form the compartment is abandoned, but using the wardrobe as a room wall, which avoids adding a new wall to compress the bedroom area, and just like adding a sound insulation equipment because of the hanging clothes in the wardrobe, while providing storage spaces for two bedrooms, with better effect of blocking the sound transmission.
Inspiration
In everyone's heart, there is a port for freedom, just like ship enters port. The house is located in the bay area of Kaohsiung, with a panoramic view of the Kaohsiung Harbor. The decoration not only creates a high-level luxurious black tone and the basic life quality and functions, but also highlights the beautiful scenery of sea and sky outside the window. The detail of construction method matches this case very well, which is the focus of the design.
