About Realm of Clouds Residential House
Realm of Clouds is a residential building with 11 units in Taichung, Taiwan. The design joins architecture with planting, using multi-tiered vegetation, green facades and natural stone. The layout offers green views, daylight, fresh air and open interiors, while private pathways and independent entrances protect privacy. The facade greenery adds natural insulation and supports biodiversity. Rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient lighting and cross-ventilation reduce environmental impact. Locally sourced stone and recycled wood are also used.
Grand Developments's Realm of Clouds Residential House engages the pressing contemporary discourse surrounding urban density, environmental responsibility, and the reintegration of natural systems into built environments through an architectural proposition that fundamentally reimagines the residential tower typology by transforming every horizontal surface into a planted terrace capable of supporting mature trees and extensive vegetation, creating what might be understood as a vertical extension of ground-plane landscape into three-dimensional inhabited space, the design demonstrates sophisticated technical achievement in its structural capacity to bear the substantial soil depth and water retention systems necessary for mature tree cultivation at elevation, the cantilevers suggesting advanced engineering that liberates planting areas from the constraints of load-bearing wall positions below, allowing vegetation to extend beyond the building envelope and create the dramatic cascading silhouette that defines the project's visual character, the chromatic relationship between the cool mineral palette of the concrete structural system and the vibrant organic greens of the vegetation establishes a material dialogue that neither subordinates architecture to landscape nor landscape to architecture but rather proposes their fundamental integration as co-equal partners in the creation of habitable space, the board-formed concrete surfaces reveal construction methodology through their honest expression of formwork, the visible grain patterns and occasional imperfections suggesting an embrace of material authenticity rather than concealment, a characteristic associated with brutalist traditions but here softened and humanized through the mediating presence of abundant greenery, the rhythmic articulation of the boundary wall at street level employs alternating materials, concrete and timber, to create visual texture and permeability, suggesting a threshold condition that maintains privacy while avoiding the fortress-like closure of solid barriers, the massing strategy of stacking offset volumes with generous setbacks ensures that each planted terrace receives adequate sunlight for photosynthesis while creating visual variety in the elevation and preventing the monotony of repetitive floor plates, the project seems to respond to urgent questions about urban sustainability, carbon sequestration, air quality improvement, urban heat island mitigation, stormwater management, and biodiversity support within dense residential contexts, proposing that high-rise living need not preclude meaningful contact with nature or sacrifice environmental performance to achieve spatial efficiency, the integration of mature specimens rather than merely decorative planting suggests a long-term ecological vision and commitment to maintenance, acknowledging that such systems require ongoing care and stewardship, the work invites viewers to consider whether architecture might evolve from being merely a platform for human activity to becoming active infrastructure for multi-species flourishing, whether the traditional separation between building and landscape might dissolve into hybrid typologies, and how aesthetic experience might be enriched when the static permanence of built form enters into dynamic relationship with the seasonal rhythms, growth patterns, and temporal changes inherent in living plant communities, one might contemplate standing on one of these planted terraces, surrounded by rustling leaves and dappled shade, the city visible beyond and below yet held at a contemplative distance by the verdant buffer, and consider what forms of urban life become possible when nature is not relegated to parks and remnant spaces but woven directly into the fabric of daily dwelling.

Taichung, Taiwan - Operation Flow
- A seamless indoor-outdoor experience is achieved through open-plan interiors, panoramic glass walls, and nature-infused common spaces. Private pathways lead to lush gardens, ensuring green views without intrusion. Independent entrances enhance exclusivity, while natural air circulation and sensory-driven design elements - light, fragrance, and texture - create a holistic living experience.
- Research
- The design is rooted in biophilic principles, exploring how nature-integrated environments improve mental well-being, air quality, and spatial efficiency. Studies on multi-tiered forestry, microclimates, and material sustainability informed the selection of native plants and energy-efficient systems. Research also guided the project's privacy-focused urban planning, optimizing personal space within a green communal setting.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the harmony between humanity and nature, Realm of Clouds reimagines architecture as a living ecosystem. Its cascading greenery and multi-layered planting create a mountain-like landscape, enveloping residents in an organic sanctuary.
