About Ji Xiang Dao Sales Centre

Ji Xiang Dao is a mixed use sales centre in Taipei, Taiwan. The building works as a small scale department store, combining dining, retail, entertainment and cultural events. The original structure was preserved and given new commercial functions. An expanded metal mesh facade and double layer walls soften the mass of the building and balance transparency and solidity. A central courtyard and clear pathways guide visitors and link indoor and outdoor areas. The two floor building uses a steel frame and has a total floor area of 2,670 square meters.

Wey-Duan Luo and Tzu-Ping Chan's Ji Xiang Dao Sales Centre exemplifies contemporary retail architecture's capacity to synthesize functional requirements with poetic formal expression through the sophisticated deployment of perforated metal screen systems that mediate between interior commercial program and exterior urban context, positioning this work within a lineage of architecturally ambitious sales environments that understand the threshold experience as crucial to brand identity and customer engagement, while drawing upon East Asian architectural traditions that privilege permeable boundaries, layered spatial transitions, and the expressive potential of light filtered through patterned surfaces, compositional strategies that find resonance in historical precedents from traditional lattice screens and mashrabiya to mid-century modernist brise-soleil and contemporary parametric facades, the architectural achievement evident in the graceful curved geometries of the screen elements that establish rhythmic visual movement across the horizontal facade while maintaining structural clarity and functional solar control performance, chromatic sophistication demonstrated through the restrained palette that allows warm interior illumination to read as welcoming beacon against cool metallic surfaces and nocturnal darkness, technical facility apparent in the precise fabrication and installation of the perforated panels that achieve both aesthetic refinement and environmental performance, the integration of typography and signage that respects rather than competes with the architectural composition, passages of particular accomplishment including the interplay of transparency and opacity wherein perforated screens simultaneously reveal and veil interior activities creating visual intrigue that invites approach and entry, the handling of artificial lighting that transforms the screens into luminous volumetric elements rather than mere applied surfaces, the calibrated relationship between curved screen elements and orthogonal glazing systems that generates dynamic tension and spatial complexity, formal choices serving the expressive end of communicating accessibility and contemporary sophistication while maintaining human scale and tactile material presence, thematic content engaging questions of commercial architecture's cultural role as urban place-maker and community gathering point rather than purely transactional space, the exploration of threshold as liminal zone of transformation where exterior public realm transitions into interior experiential environment through carefully choreographed spatial and sensorial modulation, celebration of materiality and craft wherein industrial fabrication techniques achieve effects recalling traditional artisanal pattern-making, conceptual depth residing in the synthesis of environmental responsibility through passive solar shading, cultural continuity through reinterpretation of historical screen traditions, and commercial vitality through theatrical nocturnal presence, potential iconographic references include the lantern as symbol of guidance and welcome across many cultural traditions, the veil or screen as metaphor for revelation and concealment, curved forms suggesting organic growth and fluid movement in contrast to rigid orthogonal commercial architecture, the interplay of light and shadow evoking philosophical meditations on duality and balance, visual precedents potentially including the perforated facades of contemporary practitioners working at the intersection of digital design and material craft, the spatial layering strategies of traditional courtyard architecture, the luminous materiality of Japanese paper architecture, this Sales Centre inviting viewers to consider how commercial architecture might transcend purely functional imperatives to offer aesthetic experiences that enrich the urban fabric and daily life, how contemporary design technology enables the reinterpretation rather than abandonment of historical architectural wisdom, how lighting design transforms architecture across diurnal cycles creating distinct day and night identities, and how the threshold between public and private, exterior and interior, community and commerce might be designed not as barrier but as generous invitation to inhabitation and encounter.

Production Technology
Located near a busy commercial area in Taipei, the sales center was designed as a welcoming, community-oriented mixed-use space. Expanded metal mesh softens the building’s mass and sets it apart from typical department stores. A central courtyard enhances circulation and retail activity. Since opening, it has attracted locals and celebrities alike, becoming a lively hub that encourages photography, social sharing, and strong foot traffic.
Design Challenge
Located near a major commercial district in Taipei, this sales center faced the challenge of low foot traffic. To address this, the design team created a people-friendly, mixed-use commercial space aimed at drawing public attention. The expanded metal mesh facade balances transparency and solidity, softening the building’s mass and contrasting with the imposing feel of typical department stores. Eye-catching exteriors and varied circulation successfully attract visitors.
Project Duration
The project began in October 2023 and was completed in April 2024, located in Taipei, Taiwan.
Operation Flow
This project is a mixed use sales center designed to serve the public, strengthen neighborhood connections, and enhance brand value. Planned primarily as a commercial space, the site is located near a well known commercial district in Taipei, Taiwan. Inspired by the local context, it creates diverse spaces centered on food, clothing, living, mobility, education, and leisure.
Research
This project applied spatial design research to turn a traditional sales center into a vibrant, inclusive community hub. By integrating dining, retail, performances, and events around a central courtyard, it encouraged flow and interaction. Using human-centered methods and foot traffic studies, the team created a lively space that drew families and cultural groups. Sales hit 50 percent in a month, with high media exposure and strong public engagement.
Inspiration
The design breaks traditional single-use sales centers by fostering community interaction, linking old and new structures, and connecting surrounding pathways. The project retains the original structure, adding new commercial functions, using expanded metal and double-layer walls for a vibrant look. The layout, featuring pathways and plaza elements, successfully attracts crowds and showcases diverse space usage.
