About Art and Numeracy Academy Math Institute

Art and Numeracy Academy is an interior design for a children's mathematics learning center in Taipei City. The space covers about 200 square meters and hosts after school courses that link mathematics, art and science. The layout combines squares, triangles and circles with curved forms inspired by branching tree structures. Light wood textures and bright tones create a calm and modern learning environment. A multifunctional area under a large tree form supports reading and group work. Sinks and restrooms are placed at child friendly heights.

Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan's Art and Numeracy Academy Math Institute exemplifies contemporary educational architecture's capacity to transcend functional requirements and achieve environments that actively participate in pedagogical mission, transforming the act of learning into spatial experience through thoughtful material selection, biologically-informed structural metaphor, and child-centered proportional systems. This interior intervention appears to engage directly with emerging research in environmental psychology and developmental learning theory, which increasingly demonstrates that physical environments profoundly influence cognitive engagement, emotional security, and educational outcomes, particularly for young learners whose spatial literacy and aesthetic sensitivity develop in tandem with academic skills. The design demonstrates compositional sophistication through its asymmetrical balance of vertical and horizontal elements, the tree-inspired timber structure providing organic visual anchor while cantilevered shelving introduces dynamic horizontal extension, creating spatial rhythm that guides movement and視線 while avoiding monotony. The chromatic restraint achieves notable success, establishing a high-key foundation of warm neutrals—pale blonde timber and soft white surfaces—that maximizes natural light reflection and creates psychological openness, while the singular deep forest green accent wall provides necessary visual grounding and introduces biophilic color association with natural landscapes, the hue's cultural resonances spanning growth, renewal, calm, and the traditional educational symbolism of chalkboard surfaces. The structural installation's branching morphology suggests deliberate metaphorical intention, evoking natural growth systems, mathematical tree diagrams, neural networks, and knowledge structures that branch and subdivide, the form functioning simultaneously as practical space divider, aesthetic focal point, and conceptual teaching tool that makes abstract mathematical concepts visually tangible through architectural expression. Technical execution reveals careful attention to materiality and craft, the timber elements demonstrating clean joinery and consistent finish treatment, the integration of lighting within structural systems showing sophisticated coordination between architectural and electrical design disciplines, and the custom curved bench element indicating bespoke fabrication calibrated precisely to the spatial conditions and user population. The furnishing scale and proportion demonstrate developmental appropriateness, seating heights and table surfaces positioned for elementary-age children while avoiding infantilizing aesthetics, respecting young users' capacity for sophisticated design experience. The incorporation of living plant material introduces organic irregularity and biological presence that softens geometric clarity while providing developmental benefits associated with biophilic exposure, the broad-leafed specimen suggesting philodendron or similar tropical foliage chosen for low-light tolerance and visual impact. The illumination strategy creates layered lighting conditions from multiple sources at varying heights and intensities, avoiding the institutional flatness of uniform overhead lighting in favor of more nuanced atmospheric quality that supports varied activities from focused reading to collaborative exploration, the warm color temperature suggesting LED sources calibrated to approximate natural daylight's psychological effects. How might educational environments continue evolving beyond functional accommodation toward architecturally sophisticated spaces that recognize learning as embodied, spatial, and aesthetic experience rather than purely cognitive process, and what role might material beauty, proportional harmony, and spatial generosity play in communicating to young learners that their intellectual development merits environmental investment and design excellence?

Production Technology
The design is constructed with on site carpentry and prefabricated furniture in the factory.
Design Challenge
Art and Numeracy Academy is not just a classroom for inspiring numerical reasoning; it is a creative and aesthetic learning space where every child can discover the joy of learning, fully develop their potential, and shine with confidence in the world of mathematics.
Project Duration
The design started in October 2023 in Taipei City. The construction period was January to February 2024, and completed in March 2024.
Operation Flow
The multifunctional area under the large tree serves as an ideal space for reading, discussions, and various activities, fostering interaction and collaborative learning between children and adults. All interior decor uses environmentally friendly green building materials and sound-absorbing wood wool panels, complemented by advanced digital equipment, ensuring a child-friendly learning environment. Additionally, facilities like sinks and restrooms are thoughtfully designed at child-friendly heights, enabling younger children to use them independently.
Research
A large display window serves as a platform for teachers and students to showcase their mathematical projects, presenting fresh and innovative learning outcomes throughout the seasons.
Inspiration
The spatial design of Art and Numeracy Academy also adheres to principles of openness, comfort, and aesthetics. The layout integrates squares, triangles, and circles, and employs L-System-inspired tree branches to create smooth, curved spaces. Bright and elegant tones, combined with warm, light wood textures, establish a modern yet cozy learning environment.
