About Frost And Flame Performaning Art and Stage Design

The color palette transitions from cool to warm tones, representing the tragic impacts of global warming. However, the re-freezing of the text credit at the conclusion of the performance provides a glimmer of hope, symbolizing the potential power of humanity's collective efforts. This unique fusion of traditional ink with environmental awareness elevates classical ink painting into the sphere of contemporary art, highlighting its vitality while integrating with the body language of modern dance in the digital era.

Within the evolving landscape of contemporary performing arts and stage design, Lampo Leong's Frost And Flame emerges as a sophisticated meditation on the integration of human movement with immersive digital environments, demonstrating remarkable facility in creating theatrical atmospheres that transcend conventional stage boundaries. The work positions itself within traditions of multimedia performance art that trace lineages through the pioneering light experiments of Loïe Fuller, the Bauhaus stage workshops, and contemporary practitioners who explore the intersection of technology and embodied expression. The technical achievement resides not merely in the spectacular chromatic projection but in the precise choreographic relationship between performer and digital canvas, where the dancer's silhouette becomes simultaneously figure and ground, presence and absence, flesh and shadow. The chromatic vocabulary oscillates between the passionate warmth of deep reds suggesting flame, vitality, and transformation, and the ethereal coolness of white passages evoking frost, stillness, and crystalline purity, establishing a visual dialectic that invites contemplation of fundamental natural dualities. The compositional intelligence demonstrates awareness of classical pictorial principles while embracing the temporal dimension unique to performance documentation, capturing a moment of suspended animation where potential energy coils within the dancer's poised form. The floor's reflective surface doubles the chromatic intensity while grounding the figure within measurable space, preventing the composition from dissolving entirely into abstraction. Thematically, the work appears to explore universal human experiences of transformation, the capacity of the disciplined body to channel elemental forces, and the contemporary performer's navigation between physical presence and digital environment. The viewer might contemplate how this fusion of ancient dance traditions with cutting-edge projection technology speaks to enduring questions about the relationship between body and image, performer and spectacle, individual expression and technological mediation.

Production Technology
This work began by hand-painted ink paintings on rice-paper. Next, converted these physical artworks into digital images using a high-resolution scanner. Finally, software such as TouchDesigner is used to create dynamic movements, blending traditional painting techniques with digital generative elements to achieve an immersive installation and unique stage design for modern dance performance.
Design Challenge
The transformation of classical and contemporary ink painting mediums and techniques into postmodern digital generative video art serves as an immersive installation and stage design for a modern dance performance.
Project Duration
The project began in October 2024 in Macao and concluded in February 2025 in Shenzhen as part of the Glow Shenzhen Light Art Festival. This immersive installation and dance performance received the prestigious Gold Medal Award in the festival.
Operation Flow
An immersive digital generative video art installation as stage design for modern dance performance.
Research
Scientists’ statistics and predictions suggest that global warming could lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity. This international environmental crisis demands collective action from individuals and countries worldwide. The immersive digital ink generative video art installation and stage design, created using digital ink, combines the distinctive texture of Chinese ink painting with the visual language of geometric abstraction and gestural abstraction to depict the transformation of a glacier from frost to flame. The transition in the color palette—from cool to warm tones—symbolizes the alarming effects of global warming. However, the re-freezing of text at the end of the video conveys a glimmer of hope, signifying the potential impact of collective global efforts. This innovative fusion of traditional ink painting with the concept of environmental consciousness propels this classical art form into the sphere of contemporary art, underscoring its relevance in the digital era. The immersive installation and dance performance not only reflect the profound wisdom of classical Chinese culture but also highlights humanity's collective responsibility. It demonstrates how traditional art forms can be revitalized and reimagined to address urgent global challenges, such as environmental conservation.
