About Talash Sustainable And Decorative Pendant

Talash is a pendant lamp made from pressed brass shavings. The shavings are a byproduct of machining, collected from factory production and compressed under high pressure into solid shades. The compressed texture is different in every piece and creates varying light patterns as the angle and intensity of the light change. A clear lacquer or a nano-ceramic coating protects the brass from oxidation and keeps its golden tone. Each fixture weighs about three to five kilograms and uses LED-compatible fittings with warm or neutral light.

Waxy Design Studio's Sustainable And Decorative Pendant emerges from contemporary design discourse that increasingly privileges material transparency, ecological responsibility, and the integration of biophilic principles within functional objects for everyday living environments, representing a thoughtful contribution to the evolving conversation around sustainable luxury and the aesthetic possibilities inherent in natural and reclaimed materials. The composition demonstrates considerable technical sophistication in its integration of lighting engineering with organic material expression, achieving that delicate balance where functional performance and aesthetic contemplation reinforce rather than compromise one another, the diffuser disc's textured surface suggests careful research into natural fiber aggregation or agricultural byproduct processing techniques that transform what might otherwise be considered waste streams into visually compelling and functionally effective lighting components, this approach aligns with circular economy principles and the broader movement within contemporary design toward regenerative rather than extractive material practices. The chromatic achievement centers on the warm metallic palette's ability to evoke both contemporary sophistication and timeless material warmth, the brass or bronze hardware reading as simultaneously industrial and refined while the amber-gold luminosity of the activated diffuser creates atmospheric intimacy that humanizes interior environments, the careful calibration of color temperature ensures the fixture contributes to residential comfort rather than institutional coldness, and the interplay between the warm glowing organic disc and the cooler metallic structural components establishes visual interest through temperature contrast while maintaining overall tonal harmony. Thematically, the work appears to explore the persistent human attraction to natural materials and organic irregularity even within technologically mediated contexts, celebrating the visible traces of material origin and fabrication process rather than concealing them beneath homogenized surfaces, the fixture seems to propose that sustainability and aesthetic refinement need not exist in opposition but can instead synthesize into objects that satisfy both environmental consciousness and sensory pleasure, inviting consideration of how design choices communicate values and how the objects we surround ourselves with shape our relationship to material culture and the natural systems from which all materials ultimately derive. The work may reference the rich tradition of paper lanterns and fiber-based luminaires found across numerous cultures while translating that heritage into contemporary formal language, the organic textured disc perhaps evoking compressed rice paper, felted wool, or woven palm fronds while the precision metallic hardware situates the piece firmly within industrial production capabilities, this synthesis of artisanal material character and manufactured precision components suggests design's potential to bridge traditional craft knowledge and contemporary technical capacity, one might observe how the piece rewards extended contemplation as light reveals previously unnoticed surface variations and how the fixture's presence might transform from functional necessity when illuminated to sculptural object when dormant, what narratives of material transformation might viewers construct when considering the possible origins of the organic diffuser material and how might this awareness influence their relationship to the designed object and its embedded environmental considerations.

Unique Properties
Talash redefines the boundaries between industrial waste and design by transforming high-pressure pressed brass shavings into decorative lighting. The texture of compressed shavings creates a unique visual appeal, with each piece distinct in its natural randomness. Emphasizing sustainability, it highlights the interplay of texture, light, and material. A protective coating prevents oxidation, ensuring durability and preserving its golden hue over time.
Dimensions & Packaging
The fixture is crafted from pressed brass shavings with a protective coating. It features LED-compatible fittings, offering warm and neutral light options. The weight varies by model, approximately 3-5 kg per fixture. A 150 cm cable with an on/off switch is included. The surface finish showcases a natural brass texture with a matte protective coating.

Production Technology
It utilizes a high-pressure pressing technique to transform brass shavings into solid, structured forms suitable for lighting fixtures. The process involves collecting the daily production of approximately tons of brass shavings from the factory, which are then compressed into durable shapes. To prevent oxidation and ensure the longevity of the brass components, a clear protective lacquer is applied after pressing. Alternatively, a nano-ceramic coating can be used to provide an eco-friendly and long-lasting protective layer while maintaining the natural metallic appearance.
Design Challenge
The primary challenge in the Talash project was determining the optimal pressure and process for pressing the brass shavings into stable forms without compromising the visual texture. Balancing durability with the delicate appearance of the compressed shavings required precise technical adjustments and several rounds of prototyping.
Project Duration
The 'Talash' project started in early 2024 and was completed in mid-2024 ın Istanbul, Türkiye. The project involved close collaboration between design and production teams, focusing on material research, prototyping, and manufacturing processes.
Operation Flow
Lighting fixtures in the Talash Collection are designed for both residential and commercial use. Installation is straightforward: the compressed brass shade is mounted on a compatible fixture base. The luminaire can be turned on and off using a switch integrated into the power cable. The texture of the pressed brass creates varying light patterns, offering an interactive visual experience that changes with different lighting angles and intensities.
Research
The research behind the 'Talash' focused on exploring ways to repurpose industrial waste into aesthetically appealing design objects. By leveraging the inherent beauty of brass shavings, the project aimed to highlight the potential of discarded materials in creating high-quality decorative lighting. The methodology included extensive material experimentation, technical feasibility studies, and collaboration with manufacturing partners to refine the pressing and finishing processes.
Inspiration
Talash was born from a vision of transformation, elevating industrial remnants into refined design. By reclaiming brass shavings, a byproduct of machining, it unveils the hidden beauty within discarded materials. Through high-pressure compression, raw fragments are reshaped into a striking pendant that embodies sustainability and craftsmanship. Retaining its organic texture, Talash preserves its essence while symbolizing the pursuit of new possibilities in overlooked materials.
