About Serenity Modern Residential Interior
Serenity is a two-story residential interior with a total floor area of about 158 square meters. An open plan layout connects the living, dining, and kitchen areas around a sculptural glass staircase. Large-format porcelain tiles measuring 1200 by 2100 millimeters cover the floor, and glossy and matte finishes help define the entrance, living room, and dining area. The cabinetry is custom built in matte lacquer with recessed handles. Linear LED lighting is set into ceiling coves and shelf grooves. The staircase separates the public and private areas.
Contemporary residential design practices increasingly engage with light, materiality, and spatial openness as foundational elements in crafting environments that support both psychological wellbeing and aesthetic contemplation, traditions visible within this thoughtfully composed living space where architectural clarity meets textile softness in balanced dialogue. The design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of neutral palette deployment, restricting chromatic range to allow material character and spatial relationships to generate visual interest, a strategy with deep roots in modernist residential traditions from mid-century Scandinavian design through contemporary minimalist practices, yet here inflected with particular attention to tactile warmth through upholstery selection and layered window treatments that soften geometric rigor. Compositional achievement manifests in the careful calibration of horizontal and vertical elements, the ascending staircase providing dynamic diagonal thrust while maintaining visual transparency through its glass balustrade, refusing to block sightlines or fragment spatial flow, while the substantial sectional sofa offers grounding horizontal mass that anchors the eye and body within the expansive volume, its modular configuration allowing flexible occupation and social arrangement, the plush cushioning visible in soft tufted surfaces promising physical comfort alongside visual appeal. Chromatic sophistication emerges through subtle temperature shifts within the neutral spectrum, warm taupe upholstery playing against cooler gray marble and charcoal architectural surfaces, preventing monotony while maintaining overall tonal coherence, the restraint allowing attention to focus on material qualities themselves: the cool polish of stone, the soft yield of fabric, the crystalline clarity of glass, the matte absorption of textured wall surfaces, each contributing distinct sensory character to the unified whole. The integration of natural light proves particularly accomplished, daylight flooding the stairwell from above while additional fenestration behind layered drapery bathes the primary living zone in diffused radiance, the sheer undercurtains filtering brightness to prevent glare while maintaining luminous spaciousness, the heavier outer panels offering privacy control and textural depth, their vertical folds creating rhythmic surface modulation that animates the otherwise planar wall, this attention to controlled daylight distribution serving both practical and atmospheric ends, supporting varied activities while establishing serene psychological tenor. Material selections reward close examination, the large-format marble flooring with its delicate gray veining suggesting quality and permanence while maintaining visual restraint through pale tonality, the textured charcoal wall band providing necessary visual weight and grounding darker value to balance pervasive lightness, the brushed metal details on stair railing offering precise industrial refinement, each choice demonstrating considered judgment in service of holistic spatial character. Thematically, the environment appears to explore contemporary domesticity as retreat, creating sanctuary through material refinement, abundant natural light, and spatial openness rather than decorative embellishment or chromatic drama, suggesting values of clarity, serenity, and quiet luxury, the uncluttered volumes and neutral palette offering psychological respite from external complexity, while the inviting upholstered forms acknowledge bodily comfort and social gathering as essential domestic functions. The design invites contemplation of how light, material, and spatial configuration collaborate to shape lived experience, how restraint can generate richness, and how contemporary residential environments might balance aesthetic sophistication with genuine livability and human warmth.

- Unique Properties
- This project showcases a modern residential interior emphasizing spatial clarity and emotional tranquility. An open-plan layout connects the living, dining, and kitchen areas around a sculptural glass staircase. Large-format tiled flooring, concealed lighting, and seamless cabinetry maintain visual calm. Functional zones are softly divided using materials and light, creating a minimalist yet richly layered experience.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- This is a two-story residential interior with a total floor area of approximately 158 square meters and a ceiling height of 2.85 meters. Primary materials include 1200 x 2100mm marble-pattern continuous porcelain tiles, matte metal and skin-feel slatted panels, powder-coated steel elements, artistic wall finishes, LED linear lighting, and glass stair railings. All furniture and cabinetry were custom-designed to suit the layout, ensuring both functional and aesthetic coherence.

- Production Technology
- The flooring features 1200 x 2100mm large-format continuous-pattern porcelain tiles, installed with a professional leveling system to ensure surface flatness. All cabinetry is custom-built in matte lacquer, integrating recessed handles and soft-close hardware for seamless functionality. Frameless tempered glass is fixed with embedded metal channels to maintain a clean, unobtrusive interface. Linear LED strips are recessed into ceiling coves and shelf grooves, with a low-voltage dimming system for both visual comfort and flexible illumination.
- Design Challenge
- The project involved combining two independent vertically stacked units into a single residence, which required structural reinforcement for a new interior staircase. Transporting large tiles was also a challenge, as they could not fit in the elevator and had to be crane-lifted. Visual heaviness was addressed by aligning structural elements with ceiling beams and using frameless glass railings for spatial clarity.
- Project Duration
- The project was completed over a period of approximately six months, from October 2023 to April 2024. It is located in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The interior utilizes a combination of glossy and matte porcelain tiles along with linear lighting to subtly define the entrance, living room, and dining area within an open-plan layout. This zoning approach preserves spatial openness while enabling visual continuity and interaction. The staircase acts as a transitional element that clearly separates public and private domains without interrupting the overall flow.
- Research
- This design explores how spatial openness, material softness, and lighting influence emotional comfort in residential settings. Drawing from Japanese and Scandinavian minimalism, it prioritizes balance and proportion. Observations of how users navigate transitions between public and private zones informed the layout. Materials and lighting were chosen to reduce cognitive stress and enhance serenity.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration came from the desire to find calm in everyday life. Influenced by Japanese wabi-sabi and contemporary urban minimalism, the space was crafted to evoke emotional balance through natural textures, simple volumes, and quiet transitions. Every element—from lighting to stair detail—serves both function and feeling.
