About Flex Haven Residential Space
Flex Haven is a residential interior design for a family apartment. The design balances play and function within an adaptable layout. A central slide is joined by a swing, monkey bars and a curved ceiling, forming an environment that grows with the child. The slide unit follows a block-inspired form, and the stairs retract to become flush storage or a hideout. A ceiling track allows later conversion into a storage room. Three zones separate the parents and children areas while keeping a shared family space, so the home suits changing needs.
Lo Hsiao-Li's Flex Haven Residential Space represents a compelling achievement within contemporary residential interior design, demonstrating how thoughtful spatial planning and material restraint can yield environments of both functional versatility and aesthetic coherence. The design suggests dialogue with Scandinavian modernist traditions, particularly the mid-century emphasis on natural materials, clean geometries, and integrated storage solutions, while simultaneously engaging contemporary concerns around flexible domesticity and multi-generational living patterns. The compositional achievement of this interior resides in its successful negotiation between substantial built-in architectural elements and furnishings of inviting tactile warmth, the blonde wood millwork system providing a unified backdrop against which the cognac leather seating reads with particular richness and material presence. The chromatic strategy demonstrates sophistication through limitation, deploying a reduced palette of warm sienna, pale ash, soft ivory, and strategic matte black accents to create visual calm without sterility, each material contributing distinct textural character while maintaining overall tonal harmony. Technical merit appears evident in the precision joinery of the integrated cabinetry, the clean detailing where millwork meets wall and ceiling planes, and the thoughtful proportioning of open display cubes against closed storage volumes, suggesting careful consideration of both visual rhythm and functional utility. The introduction of the wooden slide element represents a particularly intriguing formal intervention, its curved blonde form introducing playful kinetic possibility into an otherwise orthogonal composition, potentially suggesting design responsiveness to family dynamics, childhood inhabitation, or simply an embrace of domestic joy and unexpected movement through space. The spatial organization facilitates multiple modes of occupation simultaneously, the generous seating arrangement supporting gathering and repose while the desk-height surface integrated within the millwork system enables productive work or study, reflecting contemporary patterns of residential space serving increasingly varied programmatic needs. The suspended black metal brackets introduce vertical punctuation and organizational potential without visual heaviness, their minimal profiles and regular spacing creating graphic rhythm against the pale ceiling plane. The generous fenestration flooding the space with natural illumination speaks to residential wellness considerations, the connection to urban context beyond suggesting metropolitan inhabitation while the interior palette and material warmth provide counterbalance to the dense built environment visible through the glazing. One might observe how the design invites contemplation of domesticity as curated experience, the visible arrangement of books and objects within the display niches suggesting personal narrative and the ongoing evolution of lived space, the interior functioning not as static showpiece but as framework for daily life, memory accumulation, and the small rituals that constitute home.

- Production Technology
- To ease the upkeep of a large home, the design prioritizes organized storage, assigning every item a clear place to reduce cleaning stress. In the children’s bathroom, mineral coatings create seamless, mold-resistant surfaces for easy maintenance. Wood grain elements—ranging from natural veneers to laminates—are selected based on function, balancing durability with visual warmth. Each material choice reflects careful consideration of daily living needs.
- Design Challenge
- Situated on a triangular plot, this fan-shaped home redefines daily living through the movement of natural light. Public areas and bedrooms line the sunlit edge, allowing daylight to guide the spatial experience. Core functions are placed inward to ensure fluid flow and generous storage. The layout fosters comfort, sustainability, and harmony with modern life’s shifting pace.

- The layout is thoughtfully divided into three zones, balancing privacy and shared living. The outer edges house bedrooms and common areas, while the central zone is a shared family space. To the left of the entrance lies the parents’ domain—master bedroom, ensuite, walk-in closet, kitchen, and laundry. The right side is designed for the children, with bedrooms, a bathroom, and a multipurpose playroom. This subtle zoning separates adult and child spaces while preserving interaction, creating a flexible home that nurtures independence and connection.
- Research
- This project challenges the child-centered norm by redefining the home as a balanced space for both parents and children. Activity zones are subtly divided to foster independence while preserving restful areas for adults. Thoughtful circulation connects yet separates, allowing seamless shifts between interaction and solitude. Family life is reframed not as sacrifice, but as a shared rhythm that respects individual needs within a collective home.
- Inspiration
- Soft wood tones, paired with light beige and warm white, create a serene, family-friendly space. The master bedroom continues this palette with green accents and deeper materials for a calming effect. In the children’s bathroom, specialty coatings minimize grout lines for easy upkeep, while playful tiles add joy. A display cabinet from entry to kitchen echoes cabinetry from the family’s old home, preserving design memory and offering the child a sense of comfort and familiarity.
