About Home Quartet Residence
Home Quartet is a duplex residential interior designed for a family of four in Taiwan. The 158.6 square meter home places the living room, dining room, kitchen, and a co-reading area on the first floor, forming one open social space. A round dining table and the adjacent couch invite gatherings, while a rattan hanging chair by the window serves both children and elders. Blue is the main color, set against white walls, large tiles, warm solid wood furniture, and a leather sofa. Tall rear windows bring daylight into the shared areas, and the upper floor holds bedrooms and a study for privacy.
PILOSTYLE CO., LTD.'s Home Quartet Residence exemplifies contemporary residential design traditions that privilege spatial continuity, material refinement, and the orchestration of domestic experience through architectural means, situating itself within lineages extending from early modernist open-plan experiments through midcentury transparency advocacy to present-day explorations of residential minimalism and material honesty. The design demonstrates compositional maturity through its sophisticated negotiation between functional infrastructure and aesthetic expression, the central island volume functioning simultaneously as culinary workstation, social fulcrum, and sculptural object whose pristine white surfaces and waterfall-edge detailing suggest both pragmatic durability and visual refinement, the glossy engineered stone capturing and reflecting ambient light to create luminous presence that animates the foreground while establishing material continuity with surrounding neutral surfaces. Overhead, the black baffle ceiling element achieves notable formal impact, its rhythmic linear geometry introducing visual texture and directional emphasis while concealing utilitarian lighting infrastructure, the deep tonal contrast against white ceiling planes creating volumetric definition and spatial drama without compromising the overall sense of openness and light, this element suggesting awareness of Japanese architectural traditions that celebrate shadow and material repetition as spatial modifiers. The chromatic strategy reveals careful calibration, deploying a foundation of warm whites, soft grays, and black accents that evoke gallery-like serenity while allowing strategic injections of saturated color—citron upholstery, Prussian cabinetry, verdant foliage—to register with heightened intensity, each chromatic moment functioning as visual punctuation within the composed neutrality, this approach reflecting contemporary preferences for restrained palettes that foreground material quality and spatial clarity over decorative exuberance. The transparent glazed partition system demonstrates sophisticated spatial thinking, maintaining visual connectivity between kitchen and living zones while providing acoustic and atmospheric separation, the floor-to-ceiling black-framed glass suggesting industrial warehouse conversions and loft typologies that celebrate structural honesty and material legibility, yet here refined and domesticated through proportion, detailing, and integration with residential furnishing systems. Material orchestration reveals design intelligence, juxtaposing cool glossy stone, warm natural wood, industrial metal, luxurious marble, soft upholstery, and living plants to create tactile and visual diversity that rewards close attention and extended inhabitation, the walnut media console and brass-toned lighting fixtures particularly introducing warmth and organic character that prevent the composition from reading as sterile or impersonal despite its formal discipline. The incorporation of biophilic elements through potted plants acknowledges growing recognition of nature's psychological benefits within built environments, the broad-leafed specimens providing chromatic relief, organic form contrast, and atmospheric softening while suggesting ongoing care and seasonal change within otherwise static architectural frameworks. Lighting design operates through multiple thoughtful registers, combining recessed ambient sources, linear cove illumination that visually lifts ceiling planes, and sculptural arc floor lamps whose sweeping brass cantilevers introduce kinetic gestures and warm pools of focused light, this layered approach enabling atmospheric modulation to support diverse activities and temporal conditions from bright morning food preparation through intimate evening gathering. The spatial layering achieved through overlapping planes, transparency modulation, and atmospheric perspective creates compositional depth and viewing complexity, the composition inviting the eye to move across the foreground island, through the transparent threshold, along the marble feature wall, and into partially visible adjacent territories, this visual journey suggesting domestic narratives of movement, inhabitation, and social interaction that unfold across interconnected zones. The work invites consideration of how contemporary residential design increasingly frames everyday activities—cooking, conversing, resting, viewing—as aesthetic experiences worthy of architectural attention and material refinement, the space suggesting that domestic life can be simultaneously functional and contemplative, pragmatic and beautiful, ordinary and elevated through thoughtful design intervention.

- Production Technology
- The color scheme centers on blue, paired with ICI white walls for a clean, contrasting backdrop. Large tiles and stone provide a solid base, while warm custom solid wood furniture adds inviting texture. Select trims highlight American design, and a leather sofa brings warmth and refinement. This thoughtful mix of materials balances bold eclecticism with a soft, welcoming home atmosphere, letting the family's genuine emotions flow naturally throughout the space.
- Design Challenge
- A major challenge was convincing the client to embrace vibrant colors and large tiles, such as bold blue in the entryway, carpet, and kitchen. This required careful balance and patient communication to ensure harmony and client confidence. Integrating elements like the hanging chair, round table, and couch into the American-inspired design also needed to address elders and children safely. Guided by the concept of 'togetherness,' the designer crafted a diverse, authentic living experience for the family.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in June 2022 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The round table and adjacent couch naturally draw family and friends together, creating a warm, unified space filled with laughter. The rattan hanging chair by the window is a favorite for children's play and offers elders a commanding view, blending playfulness with comfort.
