About Hollow Valley Residence
Hollow Valley is a residential interior design for a family of six in Wenzhou, Zhejiang. The home covers 900 square meters and is arranged to balance the lifestyles of two generations. The original building structure was cut and reorganized into geometric blocks, forming crisscrossing paths. A deconstructed staircase with misplaced treads carries light between the floors. The dining and kitchen areas are separated by an elongated central island that offers storage and acts as a gathering point. The island also guides movement through the space like a corridor.
Weifeng Ni's Hollow Valley Residence exemplifies contemporary interior design's engagement with minimalist spatial philosophy and material restraint, positioning itself within ongoing dialogues between modernist reduction and habitable warmth that have animated residential architecture since mid-century practitioners first proposed radically simplified domestic environments, the design demonstrates sophisticated compositional intelligence through its disciplined geometric organization, the cylindrical column functioning simultaneously as structural element and sculptural form that punctuates and organizes the flowing horizontal space, establishing vertical counterpoint to the prevailing lateral extension suggested by the continuous window wall and low seating plane, the chromatic achievement resides in the nuanced handling of an exceptionally compressed palette, the designer orchestrating subtle variations within beige, cream, and warm neutral tones that reward sustained attention, the introduction of rich wood tones at right providing essential warmth and material diversity preventing the monochromatic scheme from reading as austere or cold, technically the space reveals accomplished understanding of light behavior and surface interaction, the diffused natural illumination permitted by translucent window treatments creating gentle atmospheric glow that enhances rather than flattens spatial volume, the matte flooring and soft upholstery absorbing light to create subtle tonal gradations across surfaces, the seating modules themselves demonstrate refined formal thinking, their low profiles and modular geometry permitting flexible arrangement while maintaining visual coherence, the absence of conventional legs creating floating appearance that enhances spatial continuity between floor and furniture, thematically the residence invites contemplation of essential dwelling, of how minimal architectural and material means might support maximal experiential richness, the design seemingly exploring questions of sufficiency, restraint, and the qualitative difference between emptiness and purposeful spatial openness, the work engages phenomenological dimensions of interior experience, how light, material, proportion, and spatial volume combine to create atmospheres conducive to particular modes of inhabitation, references to minimalist artistic traditions and reductive design movements appear throughout, the spatial organization suggesting affinities with Donald Judd's proportional systems, the material warmth recalling Scandinavian modern interiors that tempered modernist severity with natural elements and human-scaled comfort, the emphasis on light and shadow play evoking Japanese architectural traditions where emptiness becomes active presence, viewers encountering this space might consider how contemporary residential design negotiates between aesthetic reduction and lived comfort, how minimalist principles initially developed in artistic contexts translate into domestic environments requiring warmth and habitability, what essential elements constitute enriching dwelling spaces when ornament and excess fall away, and how careful attention to proportion, material, and light might create environments supporting contemplative presence and mindful inhabitation.

- Unique Properties
- Located in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, with a floor area of 900 square meters, this case is dedicated to reconstructing the parallel space of a family of six in a common residence, balancing the lifestyles of two generations, and creating a livable living place. The original structure of the building is cut and reorganized by geometric blocks to form crisscrossing paths, alluding to the dialectical relationship of "existence and non-existence" in oriental space philosophy.

- Production Technology
- Through the three-dimensional grid weaving of light and shadow, the spatial entity gradually fades into a flowing light container. The staircase installation uses a deconstructionist approach to reshape the vertical dynamic line, and the misplaced treads form a carrier for the light track, so that the light and shadow scenes of alternating day and night can freely diffuse between the floors.
- Design Challenge
- The original structure of the building is cut and reorganized by geometrical blocks to form crisscross paths, which is in line with the dialectical relationship of "existence and non-existence" in oriental space philosophy. The agreement of materials makes the whole space more gentle and harmonious, and the concept of indoor-outdoor communication makes the whole space brighter and freer.

- Operation Flow
- The dining and kitchen areas were designed separately with an elongated central island, which serves as a gathering spot with storage capabilities. The structure of the island integrates seamlessly with the rear elevation from a horizontal view angle, which also works as a corridor guiding the flow spatially.
- Research
- The first physical dimension balances the parallax through geometric cutting, the second optical dimension relies on the window system to guide the space-time narrative, and the third spiritual dimension creates an empty and silent mood through the collision of white space and texture. Ultimately, it realizes the borderless state of "living in it without servitude to things", so that intergenerational differences can be naturally bridged between the flow of light and shadow.
- Inspiration
- This case is a friend's house, which needs to be designed to dissolve the boundary between the lives of two generations as the core demand, and explore the multi-dimensional symbiosis system in the context of contemporary wabi-sabi aesthetics by reconstructing the parallel spatial sequence.
