About Serene Elegance Residential House
Serene Elegance is a residential interior design for the communal areas of a home. The entryway, living room, dining room and kitchen are defined by spatial partitioning instead of closed walls. Walls were removed and relocated to improve the use of the area, and a small room was opened to connect the living room and the kitchen. A television wall and an island divide the open layout. Large windows bring in daylight, while neutral tones and flowing lines create a calm atmosphere. Environmentally friendly building materials were used throughout.
Serene Elegance Residential House by YI HSIANG CHENG embodies a contemporary residential design philosophy where architectural restraint and material refinement converge to create spaces of contemplative repose and sophisticated domestic habitation. This interior composition participates in the broader discourse of contemporary minimalism within residential architecture, drawing upon traditions of spatial essentialism that emerged from modernist principles while incorporating the material warmth and tactile sensibility characteristic of current high-end interior design practice. The architectural strategy evidenced here demonstrates mastery of proportion and interval, where the careful calibration of solid and void, mass and transparency, generates spatial rhythm that guides movement and encourages visual exploration across interconnected zones. The material palette reveals exceptional discernment in the selection and juxtaposition of finishes: the warm-toned natural stone platform, possibly travertine or cream marble, provides textural richness and geological depth, its organic veining patterns offering subtle visual interest within the otherwise disciplined geometric order, while the smooth plaster or painted wall surfaces create expansive planes of luminous neutrality that enhance the perception of spatial volume and airiness. The integration of media technology within this refined architectural context demonstrates thoughtful resolution of contemporary functional requirements within an aesthetic framework that prioritizes visual calm and coherent material expression, the dark rectangular display serving as a controlled accent within the predominantly light-valued composition rather than dominating or disrupting the spatial harmony. Chromatic sophistication manifests in the orchestration of closely related neutral tones spanning warm grays, soft beiges, and muted earth pigments, their subtle differentiation creating depth and definition without relying on strong color contrast, suggesting an approach to interior coloration informed by awareness of how natural and artificial light modulates perceived hue throughout daily cycles. The lighting design evidences particular accomplishment, layering ambient illumination from concealed recessed sources with task and accent lighting from sculptural fixtures, creating atmospheric conditions conducive to relaxation and domestic comfort while maintaining sufficient illumination for practical activities, the warm color temperature of accent lamps contributing psychological warmth that balances the cool elegance of stone and the crispness of white architectural surfaces. Spatial organization reveals sophisticated understanding of visual connectivity and threshold modulation, where glimpsed adjacent spaces invite exploration while maintaining definition between functional zones, the horizontal banding and framed openings creating deliberate compositional relationships that reward sustained looking and suggest the continuation of design refinement beyond the immediate view. This residential environment invites consideration of how contemporary domestic spaces can achieve serenity and visual coherence through material honesty, proportional refinement, and the expressive potential of restraint, offering inhabitants a daily environment that supports both functional living and aesthetic contemplation.

- Production Technology
- Originally, many partitions made the space feel cramped. We improved efficiency by removing and relocating walls, allowing for better utilization of the area. We also chose environmentally friendly building materials to create a living-friendly environment.
- Design Challenge
- The biggest challenge in this design is simplification—how to refine unnecessary decorative elements to make the space appear more minimalist. Achieving this requires careful consideration of each element's purpose and impact on the overall aesthetic. By focusing on clean lines, neutral colors, and functional furniture, we can create an environment that feels open and inviting. The goal is to eliminate visual clutter while maintaining a sense of warmth and comfort, ensuring that the space is not only beautiful but also practical for everyday living. This approach allows for a harmonious balance between form and function.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in May 2025 in New Taipei city.
- Operation Flow
- We transformed the original small room into a shared space, connecting the living room and kitchen to create an open layout. The area is divided by a TV wall and an island, which also expanded the activity space within the home.
- Research
- The way people interact within a space can be altered through the design of partitions, changing the patterns of activities they engage in at home. Thoughtful partition design not only affects physical movement but also influences social interactions and the overall atmosphere. By creating distinct areas for various functions, such as work, relaxation, and socializing, we can enhance comfort and functionality. Ultimately, this approach fosters a more harmonious living environment that caters to the diverse needs of its inhabitants, promoting a balanced lifestyle.
- Inspiration
- This design is inspired by the outdoors, emphasizing nature and comfort. Large windows allow ample sunlight to fill the space, creating a bright and transparent atmosphere. Neutral tones and flowing lines bring a sense of tranquility, while the overall layout balances practicality and aesthetics. Natural materials and delicate details make the space not just a living environment, but a sanctuary for the soul.

Design Interview about Serene Elegance Residential House
The design is rooted in nature as its primary language, translating the essence of outdoor landscapes into a spatial experience defined by light, materiality, and perception. It is based on the idea that harmony emerges through the balance of contrasting elements—solid and void, light and shadow, nature and structure.
The main focus was to create a calm yet refined living environment that balances functionality with emotional resonance, allowing residents to reconnect with nature within a contemporary setting.
The design has the potential to be adapted into real residential projects or further developed into a design prototype for contemporary living concepts.
The concept development and design process took approximately several weeks, including research, spatial planning, and refinement.
This project was initiated from a personal exploration of how architecture can restore a connection between humans and nature, rather than being a commissioned work.
Currently, the design exists as a conceptual project, but it is open to collaboration, development, or potential production in future residential projects.
Residential design offers a direct way to influence daily life, making it an ideal medium to explore the relationship between space, emotion, and nature.
The design is influenced by minimalist architecture and the integration of natural elements, as well as contemporary approaches to spatial fluidity and material expression.
The target users are individuals who value a balanced lifestyle—those who seek tranquility, aesthetic quality, and a strong connection to nature.
Unlike purely aesthetic or purely functional designs, this project integrates emotional experience, spatial clarity, and natural elements into a cohesive system.
The name reflects the concept of “harmony in contrast,” emphasizing that opposing elements do not compete but complete each other.
The project was developed using digital modeling, rendering, and visualization tools to explore spatial quality and material expression.
The most distinctive aspect lies in its seamless integration of nature and architecture, creating a spatial narrative that feels both grounded and elevated.
The design was primarily developed independently, with reference to interdisciplinary knowledge in architecture, interior design, and environmental design.
Technology played a key role in visualizing spatial atmosphere, testing material combinations, and refining design details.
The design is informed by research on spatial psychology, natural lighting, and contemporary living patterns.
One of the main challenges was balancing openness with spatial definition, ensuring both fluidity and clarity within the layout.
Submitting to an international competition was a way to share the concept globally and gain professional recognition and feedback.
This project deepened the understanding of how subtle design decisions can influence emotional perception and spatial experience.
This project represents an ongoing exploration of how design can create meaningful connections between people, space, and nature.
