About Xiushan Lantern Brand and Illustration
Xiushan Lantern is a branding and illustration project based on the Xiu Shan Lantern Dance, a national intangible cultural heritage of southeastern Chongqing. The design extracts lantern shapes, folk patterns, traditional colors and dance movements, and then retells them in a simple modern visual language. The illustrations are drawn with vector software and applied to cultural products, including red envelopes printed on recyclable paper and other items made of acrylic. The aim is to bring the lantern culture into daily life and to support its continuity.
Xuanli Pan's Brand and Illustration emerges from the rich visual traditions of festival culture and community celebration, engaging with centuries-old practices of lantern crafting, ceremonial decoration, and folk art while translating these heritage forms into a contemporary graphic design vocabulary suited to brand identity and visual communication applications. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of both traditional decorative systems and modern graphic design principles, achieving a synthesis that honors cultural heritage while speaking fluently in the visual language of contemporary commercial communication, a balance that reflects broader trends in cultural branding and heritage-inspired identity design where traditional motifs and craft aesthetics are adapted for promotional, marketing, and commercial applications without sacrificing authentic connection to source traditions. The compositional achievement is considerable, employing rigorous symmetrical structure that creates immediate visual impact and memorable iconic presence while distributing ornamental complexity evenly across the picture plane to reward sustained viewing and detailed examination, the underlying grid system demonstrating design sophistication in its modular organization and repetition-with-variation approach that allows both systematic coherence and individual character across the four figurative elements. Chromatic sophistication is particularly evident in the bold yet harmonious palette that combines saturated complementary and analogous relationships—the magenta-cyan contrast providing vibrant optical energy while the yellow ground and green atmospheric zone create transitional warmth—demonstrating mastery of color psychology and the emotional communication potential of chromatic choice, as these hues collectively evoke festivity, celebration, luminosity, and joyful abundance while maintaining graphic clarity and legibility essential for effective brand communication. The integration of ornamental detail within clearly structured geometric figuration reflects deep engagement with folk art traditions where decorative elaboration and pattern density signify festive abundance, cultural continuity, and communal celebration, each lantern structure featuring architectural elements that suggest actual three-dimensional festival lanterns with their layered construction, hanging embellishments, and illuminated panels, while the decorative bands, rosette patterns, and geometric borders recall textile ornamentation, embroidery traditions, and the visual languages of ceremonial costume. The stylized human figures, with their theatrical expressions and geometric simplification, draw upon folk art figuration traditions where character types are rendered through bold graphic reduction rather than naturalistic representation, creating instantly recognizable visual personalities that communicate joy, welcome, and festive spirit through formal means—the wide smiles, symmetrical facial features, and frontal poses suggesting the directness and accessibility characteristic of folk art and popular visual culture. Thematically, the work appears to explore the intersection of cultural heritage preservation and contemporary commercial application, asking how traditional visual languages and ceremonial aesthetics can be activated in modern contexts, how festival culture can be visualized for branding purposes, and how graphic design can serve as a vehicle for cultural celebration and community identity, the repetitive structure suggesting both the serialized logic of brand systems and the communal, collective nature of festival participation where individual elements combine into larger celebratory wholes. The work invites contemplation of how cultural traditions evolve and adapt, how visual heritage informs contemporary identity construction, and how graphic design serves not merely commercial functions but also cultural preservation and celebration, prompting viewers to consider their own relationships to festival traditions, community celebration, and the visual languages through which cultural belonging and festive joy are expressed and shared.

- Operation Flow
- By extracting distinctive elements of Shouxian flower lanterns and dance movements for creation, the local cultural characteristics are highlighted. A set of eco-friendly materials is designed, balancing practicality and commemorative value. The local flower lantern performances usually take place during the Spring Festival. Therefore, this work combines the traditional Chinese red envelopes with Spring Festival items, integrating these cultural products into people's daily lives, in order to promote and strengthen the culture of Shouxian flower lanterns.
- Research
- Xiu Shan Lantern Dance, as a national-level intangible cultural heritage, is a precious folk culture treasure in the southeastern part of Chongqing. However, its dissemination form is traditional and disconnected from modern life, making it difficult to attract young people. This research uses cultural innovation as a carrier, delves into the core of the lantern dance culture, and revitalizes the intangible heritage through modern design, allowing traditional culture to integrate into daily life, and achieving the protection and innovative inheritance of regional cultural heritage.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration for this work comes from the intangible cultural heritage of Xishan Lantern Show in China. It extracts the lantern shape, folk patterns and dance movements, and integrates local culture. It translates the traditional intangible cultural heritage's charm with modern design language, eliminating the complexity and redundancy, allowing the ancient lantern culture to be integrated into daily life and achieving the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage.
