About Sunset Gold Lounge Chair

Sunset Gold is a lounge chair designed for living rooms, studies and clubs. The seat is upholstered in North American top grain cowhide over high resilience foam, and the wine red surface shows a rippled texture. The base is made of aviation grade aluminium alloy, formed by CNC bending and argon arc welding, then bronze plated, wire brushed and hand polished. The leather is hand cut and sewn to keep the natural pores visible. A seat height of 420 mm and a backrest angle of 105 degrees provide comfortable support for the back and legs.

Wei Jingye / 魏靖野's Sunset Gold Lounge Chair emerges from a rich lineage of designers who have sought to dissolve the boundary between sculptural art object and functional seating, positioning this work within ongoing conversations about organic form language, material expressiveness, and the poetics of everyday objects that extend from mid-twentieth-century explorations in biomorphic modernism through contemporary studio furniture practice. The compositional achievement of this design lies in its elegant resolution of complex structural challenges through form that appears effortless and inevitable, the sweeping saddle profile of the seat distributing weight across a broad surface while the splayed quadripod base provides stable support through legs that taper with such grace that substantial metal reads as nearly weightless, each element calibrated to achieve visual and physical equilibrium that invites prolonged contemplation of how forces flow through material. The chromatic sophistication demonstrates admirable restraint, allowing two primary material presences to establish dialogue without extraneous complication, the deep burgundy leather contributing warmth, luxury, and organic tactility while the burnished metallic base introduces structural clarity and a complementary glow that suggests precious materiality without ostentation, the color relationship between these elements creating subtle temperature harmony that feels both grounded and elevated, quotidian and ceremonial. Technically, the work exhibits meticulous attention to fabrication detail, from the careful pattern-making and stitching that shapes flat leather into three-dimensional sculptural form, accommodating the complex compound curves of the seat shell while maintaining structural integrity and visual refinement, to the hand-finished quality of the metallic legs whose subtle surface variations speak to artisanal involvement rather than purely mechanized production, each detail contributing to an overall impression of considered making that honors both traditional craft knowledge and contemporary design sensibilities. The thematic content of this chair invites reflection on the experience of repose, the object proposing a specific relationship between body and support that differs markedly from upright task seating or deeply cushioned lounge furniture, instead offering a poised, slightly forward-leaning posture that balances relaxation with alertness, contemplation with readiness, solitude with social openness, the seat's generous width accommodating informal curling or cross-legged positions while the open frame below maintains visual and spatial lightness that prevents the object from dominating its environment. One might observe how the design participates in the long artistic investigation of the chair as archetype, that most fundamental furniture form that has attracted creative attention across centuries precisely because it so directly mediates the human body's relationship to gravity, rest, and social space, with this particular iteration seeming to ask what essential qualities might distinguish truly graceful seating from merely adequate support, how material choice and formal gesture might transform utilitarian necessity into aesthetic experience, and whether objects we live with daily might reward sustained looking and tactile engagement as generously as works we encounter in galleries and museums, ultimately inviting each viewer to consider how design excellence enriches the texture of everyday life through beauty that serves without announcing itself, through craft that elevates without condescending, and through form that speaks simultaneously to eye, body, and imagination.

Production Technology
Mainly made of imported North American top-layer cowhide and high-hardness aviation-grade aluminum alloy. The leather is hand-cut and sewn to retain the texture of natural pores. the metal parts use CNC precision bending and argon arc welding, with bronze electroplating and wire drawing on the surface, and finally polished through multiple manual processes to ensure that every detail is as smooth as a mirror.
Design Challenge
How to realistically restore the "Rouge Ripple" texture of the leather and the "Bronze Wire Drawing" texture of the metal in ultra-high-definition rendering, and find a harmonious point of color between the two, was the main challenge of this design. By adjusting the IOR and glossiness of the materials, a visual effect that is both retro and modern was finally achieved.
Project Duration
The design had started in Shenyang in January 2025, completed in Shenyang in June 2025, and displayed in the museum of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang in June in 2025.
Operation Flow
Suitable for use in living rooms, studies, or clubs. When the user sits on it, the soft leather quickly fits the body curves, providing a cloud-like support. the bronze metal legs flow with light and shadow as the viewing angle changes, adding a dynamic visual focus to the space. It is both a haven for rest and a visual art piece in the space.
Research
This design takes Material Narration as its core, exploring the balance between the warm texture of leather and the cold severity of metal. Through high-precision 3D rendering technology, the visual effect of Sunset Gold is maximized, proving that under a minimalist shape, the texture and light of the material itself are enough to support the design soul of a piece of furniture.
Inspiration
The design draws inspiration from the tranquility of twilight and the fluidity of liquid metal. As the sun sets the glow falls upon ancient bronze artifacts where warm light meets cool metal creating a serene and luxurious atmosphere. The curve of the backrest mimics ripples on water stirred by a gentle breeze while the metal legs resemble frozen flames capturing a moment in time. This contrast between light and shadow softness and hardness forms the core meaning of the design.
