About Gao Wei Restaurant

Gao Wei is a restaurant interior located on the third floor of a commercial mall in Kunming. The project covers 1100 square meters and presents Yunnan ethnic culture in a modern form. Different materials and colors define the functional areas, so physical partitions are reduced and the layout feels open. Smooth lines run across the walls and the ceiling, while inset lighting highlights the surface texture. The colorful exterior facade connects the interior with the mall and draws the attention of passing diners.

Steven Hu's Gao Wei Restaurant represents a remarkable achievement in contemporary hospitality design, demonstrating how material transformation and spatial choreography can elevate the dining experience into an immersive cultural narrative. The installation positions itself within the broader tradition of sculptural interior interventions, where architecture transcends mere shelter to become experiential theater. The ceiling treatment, composed of cascading hexagonal perforated metal elements in graduated amber and golden tones, suggests multiple cultural and natural references simultaneously, evoking traditional lantern forms, honeycomb structures, and the organic geometry found in crystalline mineral formations. The designer appears to engage with principles of biophilic design through these naturalistic associations while maintaining a distinctly contemporary material vocabulary. The chromatic strategy demonstrates sophisticated understanding of complementary color relationships, positioning the warm metallic installation against the cool cobalt blue seating to create visual vibration and spatial energy. This interplay between warm and cool, between the suspended and the grounded, between the geometric and the organic, establishes a dynamic equilibrium that rewards sustained visual attention. The technical accomplishment extends to the integration of multiple lighting strategies, from the functional recessed fixtures to the atmospheric pendant lamps whose rose-tinted glass offers chromatic counterpoint to the dominant golden palette. The wood elements, appearing in both vertical slat walls and furniture components, provide material warmth and tactile variation that grounds the more theatrical overhead installation. One might observe how the space balances spectacle with intimacy, the monumental ceiling treatment somehow coexisting with the human-scaled booth arrangements that invite personal conversation and comfortable dining. The design invites contemplation of how contemporary spaces might honor cultural traditions through material innovation rather than literal historical quotation.

Unique Properties
This case is a restaurant with Yunnan ethnic characteristics, the taste of dishes and feelings of expression is equally important. Its design pursues national style and original ecology, but also runs through a large number of fashionable elements. The designer starts from the inner dimension of environmental construction, through in-depth thinking and combing the relationship between food and culture, fashion and tradition, and disseminates the emotional communication channel to the heart.
Dimensions & Packaging
The project covers a total of 1100 square meters. The pattern design of the main axis makes use of the interpolation and distinction between spaces, smooth lines and functions, meets the diverse dining needs of diners, enlarges the space vision, and devotes itself to creating the restaurant space of modern city.

Production Technology
The designers uses different materials and colors to distinguish different functional areas, which reduces the physical partition in space and makes the functional layout appear in the invisible partition, and has a great sense of bulk. At the same time, it shows a simple texture in the design. As far as the eye can see, the smooth lines are laid out on the facade and the top, outlining the delicate texture details, and the inlaid exquisite lighting makes the texture sublimate.
Design Challenge
This case is located on the third floor of a commercial mall. Due to the limitation of the project location, it is more difficult to attract the customers and export the brand. Therefore, through the combination and splicing of multiple rich colors, the exterior facade creates rich and varied visual effects, and establishes the interaction between indoor and outdoor, which can easily capture the eyes of passers-by diners.
Project Duration
The project started in February 22, 2019 in Kunming and finished in March 25, 2019 in Kunming.
Operation Flow
The design team follows the brand's consistent exquisite and colorful approach, focusing on highlighting the virtual and real space and liquidity. With transparent, pluralistic and delicate visual presentation, in a rational and fashionable style, the designers get rid of the public's inherent impression of Yunnan-style restaurants, which is flexible and comfortable.
Research
The quality and variety of products are only the basic demands of diners, while the situational and personalized environment and its brand aesthetics are the important factors of brand circle fans. Therefore, how to have both "authentic Yunnan taste" and a new perspective and thinking has become the focus of space expression in this case.
Inspiration
The interior captures the details of traditional Yunnan architecture, creating a futuristic and trendy space. Designers from the Oriental aesthetic continuation of modern design, with traditional classical elements mirror the temperament of the times, so that the diversified elements of Yunnan better integrate with urban space, giving space a strong visual impact.
