Interview with Maxxis International Co., Ltd. Cheng Shin Rubber Ind. Co., Ltd.

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
We are a team combining of engineers and designers. We try to bring an engineering task into design field, and try to see the problem in a design approach. This is what we want to do and this is what T Razr represents: a piece of work that has the skin of an authentic look and the flash and bone of careful measured engineering wisdom.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
We are a design team inside Maxxis, concentrating on user research and innovated product development.
What is "design" for you?
Design is the process of discovering problems, and furthermore, solving the problems in a cooler way. We are always trying to come up with a better solution each time we face a new unsolved design task.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
We are interested in designing products that are very practical and useful, or the projects that have a great influence inside the department and even outside the department.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Hamburgers, it contains a balance recipe including breads, vegetable and meat. Plus it is designed to be easily reproduced in a fast speed and maintain a great consistent. Besides, the size and shape of a hamburger is very user friendly as well. Hamburgers are easy to grab with one hand. They can be wrapped with a plain sheet and the sheet itself can perform all the functions from labeling to packaging, and be used as tableware in the mean time.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
ABS, the material which is often used in 3D printer. The favorite platforms are Facebook, Google, and Instagram.
When do you feel the most creative?
We feel most creative when having a good discussion with others, whether it is with colleges, or friends from other fields. A nature collapse of ideas generates unexpected outcomes. In a lot of situations, these ideas have big chances to be carried out.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
We pay a lot of attention in designing the product to be more durable. We think that is the basic requirement to a product. Beyond that, creating uniqueness for the products and makes them stand out from the similar kinds is also an important job for designers.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Every design is a new challenge, the excitement while brainstorming and the anxiety while obstacles occur are all valuable emotions to the team during design process.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
When the designs are being realized in the end, the joy and relief we feel is true.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
When judging a design, we often look at how it meets the need of client first.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
In our opinion, much of the possible damage to the environment comes not just from the disposal of the products, but also comes from the mess production itself. To think about how to design the product with less waste is what the designer should keep in mind. For example, can we use a different material, a recyclable material on the product perhaps? Can we change the manufacture process and make sure each step is clean?
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
We think in the future, some origin idea may come from the user themselves. They may take part in some steps throughout the design process such as problem definition and product testing. Users are the designer designing product for them own. So we think, everyone has the chance to become designers in the future of design.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
We have not had any exhibition before. We would love to collaborate and develop concept tire with car companies if there is any chances.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
The inspiration comes from the open resources such as the internet, the academy journals, and variety types of books. Keeping an exercise plan, regular meeting with friends from different fields, and a lot of random chats are also good methods to feed the design team with fresh creativities.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Upon looking at our design, one may think of the tern”form follow function”. We do not like to design something with too much abstract aesthetics but actually doesn’t mean that much. But we would love to develop more to the appearance once all the other functional problems have been solved.
How do you work with companies?
We discuss over with the company`s strategy department and achieve yearly goals. Than we make innovate products.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
We would suggest that the innovate team to be given a bigger space by the company. And to be given time so that the influence brings by the innovation activities itself can show.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
First of all, we fully discuss over the design propose for every project. Secondly, we collect and build a data base of technology news and trends as the input of inspiration. Next, we brainstorm and sketch. After that, we visualize the concepts and run discussions on the concepts. Finally, we make adjustments to the design until the day we release the product to the market.

Do not feel bad if things do not meet your expectation. Just keep trying. Meet people and listen more to other`s opinion. Sometimes a different perspective helps.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
We have a higher standard toward the surrounds, the items we use, and the quality of life. However, we sometimes expect too much for a lot of things and do not have too much tolerance to nasty or unpleasant environment.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
The golden principle is to ask the right question and to find out what the real problems are. After that, we decide the priority for each unsolved problems, and double check the problems by consulting with users once again.
