Includes a passport of a celebrity in each edition. The passport of "Republic of Travelers" has personal information about that person and their interview. Coming is all about the idea that the best of a trip is returning home. It talks about home decoration, cooking, activities to do with our family and articles to enjoy our home better.

Interview with Catarina Jordão on Going/Coming Magazine

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
The main idea is the concept. I focused on the "trip"," journey" itself. The experience of departure and arrival, going and coming, and how different our moods are in those two moments for that reason the magazine was divided in two.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
I wanted to achieve to different magazines in one with totally different looks but that could work on the same target and could bring the message of coming and going.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
I wish I could make this project real. I made this project with the idea of improve the magazines that the airplane companies have.
Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
It was a project for my master at Elisava. The main theme was a magazine to be on board the rest of the briefing was developed by me.
Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
The design is not being produced but I would like to sell or lease the production rights to 2 or 3 airplane companies.
What made you design this particular type of work?
I wanted to do something fun and something that I would like to read during my flight. As a person who travels by airplane frequently I noticed that this type of magazines are not very good and are frequently ignored. I wanted to change that and make something interesting with a theme that everyone could relate to.
Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
Yes, my adviser at the time Óscar Germade, designer at Solo Studio, Barcelona.
Who is the target customer for his design?
The target it's people from 16-65 years old who know english and are traveling by airplane.
What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
I think the simple but effective way it was design. It was thought so people could enjoy their trips and have fun while they are on board with different details such as the passport and etc.
How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
The name came from the concept. That a journey has always two parts. Going is about traveling, having new experiences and tips to go abroad. Coming is about returning to our home, to our space and how to enjoy it better.
What is the most unique aspect of your design?
I believe it's the passport of "Republic of Travelers". I wanted to have a twist on the going magazine. So I had the idea that the typical interview of someone should be in a passport with their personal information. I liked the idea of a magazine creating a toy "the passport" and the idea of kids playing with their celebrity fake passport.
Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
My design was influenced by my ideas and my concept of what I think people would like to read during their flights. It is not based in any analytical research.
What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
The passport was difficult to find materials that looked like a passport. At first it was also difficult to design to completly different magazines to the same target.
How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
Someone saw my online portfolio and immediately sent me an email advising me to submit my work to this competition. At first I thought it was those typical emails to steal you money, but then I searched a little bit for the competition and I saw it was a legit competition so I applied.
