The Trifold's shape is informed by a combination of triangular surfaces and a unique folding sequence. It has a minimalist yet complex and sculptural design, from every view angle it reveals a unique composition. The design can be scaled to suit various purposes without compromising its structural integrity. The Trifold is a showcase of digital fabrication methods and the use of new manufacturing technologies such as robotics. The production process has been developed in collaboration with a robotic fabrication company specialising in folding metals with 6-axis robots.

Interview with Max Hauser on Trifold Table, Stool, Trestle, Plinth

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
The design has been inspired by Origami and the idea of creating a simple shape out of a single sheet of material.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
The flat piece of aluminium becomes a 3-dimensional shape by introducing structural bends. I was looking for a very robust yet beautiful and functional design.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
The table will be launched in the next 6 months and will be available for sale. Pre-orders will be taken at www.trifoldtable.com.
Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
I am planning to produce and distribute this table in collaboration with a specialist robotic fabrication company that helped to develop the previous prototypes. My thought is to maintain this collaboration as it will showcase an innovative fabrication method that forms the spirit of the design.
Who is the target customer for his design?
The table aims to please customers with a taste for modern and minimalist design who have an interest in innovation and are looking beyond the surfaces of things that surround them.
What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
The design is unique yet simple and uncompromisingly pure in its detailing. All elements such as the fixings and feet are integrated and not introduced as an after-thought as with many other pieces of furniture.
How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
The name Trifold contains the spirit of the design and fabrication process. All surfaces are triangles that are folded into a usable shape.
Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
The design was developed using 3D CAD programs and numerous physical models and mock-ups made of paper and card board – an irreplaceable tool for verifying the shape, scale, stability and folding sequence.
What is the most unique aspect of your design?
The piece has a unique, appealing and logical design. It looks different from every view angle. It is simple yet original.
Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
The table has been developed in close dialogue with a robotic fabrication company specializing in folding metals with 6-axis robots.
What is the role of technology in this particular design?
The technology informs the shape as the folding sequence is essential for the fabrication.
Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
Structural calculations of the bending edges were required to evaluate the stability of the table.
How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
Once the table had been built we received very positive feed-back from customers. I believe that it will become a popular product and that it will win further design awards in the future.
