The main emphasis of the Infinity armchair design is made precisely on the backrest. It is the reference of the infinity symbol - an inverted figure of eight. It is as if it changes its shape when turning, setting the dynamics of the lines and recreating the infinity sign in several planes. The backrest is pulled together by several elastic bands that form an external loop, which also returns to the symbolism of the infinite cyclic of life and balance. An additional emphasis is placed on unique legs-skids that securely fix and support the side parts of the armchair just like clamps do.

Interview with Natalia Komarova on Infinity Armchair

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
The idea of the shape of the backrest of the armchair is the reference of the symbol of infinity - an inverted figure of eight. In Chinese culture this sign personifies two worlds - darkness and light - Yin and Yang - death and birth. Moreover, only when connected they form the unity and infinity of all things. This infinity of perfection in the combination of masculine and feminine was laid in the basis of the design.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
I wanted to combine functionality, style and conceptualism. It was important for me to create not only a comfortable chair, but also to get an emotional response from the end user. Therefore, the world-famous philosophy of the infinity of life formed the basis of my work.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
I am now in search of a manufacturer company that would profuce my product.
How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
It took me about two months. The base was ready quite quickly, the rest of the time was devoted to adjustments.
Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
Design has become a reflection of the philosophy and values that are important to me. This is not a commissioned work, but a manifestation of my personal inspiration.
What made you design this particular type of work?
Creative impulse comes spontaneously and I can not always control this process. In this case, I had a desire to create an unusual chair.
Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
The inspiration was the philosophy itself, and not specific people or directions in design.
Who is the target customer for his design?
People who value comfort and unique product at the same time. These are those who are looking for a reflection of their personality in design.
What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
Emphasis on details and elements that differ in form from other projects.
How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
The name reflects the philosophy embedded in this design. And the shape of the sign of infinity is a central element in this work.
Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
The process began with sketching, with an attempt to highlight individual forms and elements. Further, when there is an understanding of what you want to get, the stage of work in 3D max begins, after which a finished image appears, which remains to be processed a little. The process began with sketching, with an attempt to highlight individual forms and elements. To complete the project documentation, Autocad, Photoshop and InDesign are used.
Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
When I design furniture, I always consult with orthopedic specialists to make it convenient for people to use my products.
What is the role of technology in this particular design?
I can’t say that technology played a big role in this work. I tried to create a timeless design that would fit seamlessly into the style of the past and the future.
Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
The work was influenced by my own experience in design, the path of trial and error, which each time leads me to create a better product design.
What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
I myself create a certain challenge so that every work improves me.
How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
This is my second year in this competition and I think that this is one of the most prestigious competitions. In addition, I would like to receive a feedback on my work from one of the most respected people in the world of design.
What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
I have better mastered the dynamics of forms to add more movement to my work and get away from static.
